In this investigation, we tried to prove an effect of high temperature suppression by the urban vegetation in summer based on measuring the surface temperature on the various place which utilize the vegetation for temperature control by using an infrared radiation thermometer.
The results of the measurement may be summarized as follows:
    1) The surface temperature on the green tract of land for production such as the paddy and the field show much lower than that of the lawn area as well as the asphalt pavement and the bare ground. 2) The surface temperature on the rooftop in summer rise up to almost 60.0°C, but it can be reduced to above 20.0°C by an existence of the vegetation in the roof garden.
    3) It was proved that a mortared wall or a block fence covered with the vine had a suppression effect of the temperature, which showed nearly 20.0°C on a maximum during the summer, and the surface temperature of a hedge was lower than that of a green area covered by the vine.
    4) It was cleared that the surface temperature of a residential area was influenced remarkably by a proportion of the green coverage to its area.
    5) Leaving the timber land destroyed by construction in the bare ground alone, the surface temperature of its area increase remarkably.
    6) The surface temperature of the water is lower than the atmospheric temperature or the surface temperature of the vegetation in summer. Judging from this results, it was shown that the surface of the water fulfilled the functions as a cool zone in the urban area.
    7) It was proved that the surface temperature of the artificial covering objects such as the concrete pavement or the artificial lawn rised high in the daytime of summer, and did not fall down so much even in the night, moreover the difference of the temperature between on a maximum and on a minimum was very large. On the other hand, the surface temperature of the vegetation and the water did not rise so much even in the daytime, and they were also than the atmospheric temperature in the night, besides the differenee of temperature between on a maximum and on a minimum was small.
