The purpose of this report is to clarify the relation between the type of vegetation and the activity of vizitors at large-scale city park, as a premise of the suggestion about the park design and spatial-scale well adapted for the activity of visitors. The casc study was carried on Yoyogi forestpark (c.a. 41ha), in Tokyo metropolise.
The authors observed the actual conditions of park use at 10, 12 and 14 o'clock on six Sunday, from May, 1987 to May, 1988. And we investigated the physiognomical and structural 5 factors on the characteristics of vegetation.
The results may be summarized as follows.
The characteristics of the type of vegetation were categorized to 6 groups in relation to 6 utilization patterns (Tab. 3). The results was show in Tab. 4 and Fig. 6.
    1. multipurpose turf square with many pepole
    2. open forest for rest, stroll and light sport
    3. open forest chiefly for rest visitors
    4. buffer area: only in crowded case, many pepole get in
    5. neutral area: there are little relation with utilization pattern
    6. closed forest with scarcely visitor
On the turf square, an interesting concluding was drew.
Fig.7 shows the increasing of utilization frequency according to the square scale, but very large square is not always effective for utilization. In the large square which turf area dominant above 70% in 50 by 50 meter square, numbers of visitor are less than one of smallscale square. There are most useful turf square that have some trees at a distance 14m or 12m (Tab. 5, Fig.8).

This record shows the results of the nation-wide investigation into the present real situation of Resort Development Schemes by prefectural governments, which have been accelerated so much after so-called Resort Law enforcement in June 1987.
The governments are so eager to manage those schemes in order to make their regions so promoted. But the environmental assessments in the schemes are not enough. Conservation of natural/historical environments will be a big problem in further steps.
