To evaluate the amenity and the micrometeorology in the shade of the tree crown in arid and semi-arid areas, the micrometeorological surver was conducted in parts of Japan, China and Pakistan from the 4 th to 24 th August, 1988. The energy balance on the skin surface was analysed by using the observed micrometeorological data. Obatined results were summarized as follows:
1) The meteorological factor which had largest difference between the inside and outside of the tree crown was the solar radiation. The difference was larger under the tree shade of ceder or pine tree, which have well spreading branches and taller height.
2) The difference in ground surface temperature between the both sides of the crown was also larger and increased under the condition of higher temperature of ground surface at the outside of the tree crown.
3) The difference in the air temperature, relative humidity and wind velocity between both sides of the tree crown were not so large.
4) The upper side surface hert flux of arm at inside of tree crown was flowed into the air through the body, and at outside it was flowed in an opposite direction. The difference in the upper side surface heat flux of arm between both inside and outside of the tree crown depended greatly upon the difference in net solal radiation, but did not depend upon the difference in air temperature between both sides.
