To investigate the effects of mothers' smoking on their childrens' development and smokers' childcare, we examined the development and growth of children that underwent a health examination at 3 years old.
The results suggested that the some components in cigarette smoke had a harmful effect on ovums and fertilized eggs. And it was suggested that smoking in pregnancy had a harmful effect on the central nervous system, too.
In smokers' childcare, low percentage of visiting to the infant and the baby health examination, the use of nursing bottle until 1.5 years old, poor behavior in tooth-brushing and late bed time at 3 years old were seen. In addition, smokers' children had more accidents than nonsmokers' children from birth to 3 years old. This result might be due to a harmful effect of pregnant smoking on childrens' central nervous system and smokers' poor childcare.
