The purpose of this study was to understand more about the problems of family members involved in caring for patients with dementia and to clarify the roles of dementia outpatient nursing in a dementia center in Yamagata prefecture. A questionnaire was given to family members who visited the center for examination or counseling. Four issues were investigated : the actual content of activities in the center, the characteristics of the burden of care, differences between caregivers in their feelings of the burden of care, and the influence of early diagnosis on dementia symptoms and on the burden of care.
We found that the center was fulfilling its role in providing care for patients with dementia, but was not adequate in providing instruction in methods of care or providing counseling for caregivers. It was clear that most caregivers felt great anxiety and conflict. Female caregivers felt more of a burden than male caregivers, and caregivers who live with the patient felt harder burden than caregivers who did not live with the patient. No effect of early diagnosis was found on symptoms of dementia or the burden of care.
Our results suggested that the roles of dementia outpatient nursing were required to instruction of care methods and counseling for a caregivers.

Morphological studies using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) were carried out to clarify the relationship between the kind of the adhesive plasters and their desquamation. Eleven kinds of adhesive plasters and vinyl tape were placed on the human brachial skin for 3, 12 and 24 hr respectively, and then removed the plasters and the tape from the skin surface into observation under the SEM. The results obtained by SEM analysis were as follows.
    1) SEM observation enabled us to identify clearly squamous cells from the epidermis peeled by the plasters and the tape.
    2) The density and configuration of removed squamous epithelial cells, which were attached to the surface of the plasters, varied considerably by using different adhesive plasters as well as by the duration of pasting.
    3) Paper van and elastpore had a powerful adhesion and resulted in removing a few layers of squamous epithelial cells, while vinyl tape had a weak adhesion and some areas of the skin were not exfoliated.
    4) In all plasters used, a small amount of squamous cells were removed after 3 hrs of pasting, but removed cells increased with the longer duration of pasting.
