This paper reviews a laser-trigonometer which utilizes laser diode as a light source and lateral-effect photodiode as a position-sensing device. The principle of operation and signal processing in the instrument are described. Several application areas are outlined.

Resonant photoexcitation by XUV radiation from a CO2 laser produced plasma was investigated as a possible means to achieve laser action in the UV region. A carbon plasma containing CIII was pumped by Mn VI emission at 310.18 Åemanating from Mn plasma generated nearby. Both plasmas were produced by focused CO2 laser pulses onto solid targets. Population densities of pumped CIII ions in the upper levels, 4p1P° and 4f1F°, were estimated at 5×1011cm-3 and 4×1010cm-3, respectively. The optimum intensity of CO2 laser to obtain efficient pump radiation at 310.182Å was approximately 500 MW/cm2. These results are explained by a simple hydrodynamic model of the laser-produced manganese plasma.

The transmission characteristics of fused quartz fibers for flexible delivery of high power CW YAG laser light for material processings were examined. A novel optical system was developed and used to launch YAG laser light having a large beam divergent angles and high output power, into a small core diameter fiber. The comparison between graded index fibers and step index one's have shown that output laser beam intensity profiles are similar to the refractive index pro - files of the fiber used. Some welding experiments with these fiber systems showed that there is a remarkable welding penetration/welding bead width ratio enhancement if graded index fiber is used against step index one.

Solar-blind effect in ultraviolet lidars is investigated analytically and experimentally, evaluating the background solar radiance, the cut-off characteristics of solar-blind filters, and the wavelength dependence of Rayleigh and Mie lidars. If the quality of the solar-blind filter is good, the widest altitude range is covered with the transmission wavelength slightly shorter than the cut-off wavelength, that is 305-308 nm. Using the first and the second Stokes lines of the H2 Raman laser pumped by a Kr F laser, a compact solar-blind DIAL for ozone detection with a range of 3 km is demonstrated. In the case of large lidar station, it can be expected to construct a solar-blind ozone lidar with an altitude range of 20 km by the use of a wavelength combination of 291.6 and 308 nm.
