    This paper discussed the overview and technical challenges for the next generation Internet, focusing on the transmission and switching technologies. The next generation Internet provides the broadband and always connected environment with the end-to-end architecture, while the full digital media information has been freely delivered among the digital equipments. With the R&D on the long distance and high bandwidth optical technology, the Internet will mutate from the network centric to the iDC and IX centric. The optical technology will contribute significant role to the the furture development and mutation of the Internet.

    Human access to WWW information has to become media-independent to permit full access to content. For instance we need to have an image as a possible query in order to retrieve text, or a speech utterance as a query in order to retrieve motion image. We have developing a system called the CrossMediator which realizes a complex of retrieval software modules which works among multi-media databases composing of still image, motion image, speech and text.This paper shows some examples of the multi-media reterieval system.

    This paper describes the potential bandwidth achieved by the graded-index polymer optical fiber (GI POF). Modal dispersion should be minimized to realize the high-speed data transmission in multimode type GI POE On the other hand, when the refractive index profile is optimized to reduce the modal dispersion, mode coupling, and differential mode attenuation come affect the bandwidth characteristic. In this paper, the maximum bandwidth of the GI POF is clarified by considering all important factors mentioned above, andideal design of fiber material and structure is also described. And, it is described that this high speed GI POF will be used in the future how.

    We have developed an arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) with a wavelength-routing function and have built a prototype system called AWG-STAR (wavelength routing star network) for a photonic network. The system's logical topology is a 32×32 full mesh that uses 32 wavelengths, while its physical topologyis a WDM star network with a wavelength-routing AWG at its center. It works independently of the protocol and bit rate of the data. (Gbit Ethernet, OC-4 ATM, HD-SDI, and 10-Gbit's random data can be transported without interference.) A wavelength is assigned to each node, and data are routed to the nodes according to the assigned wavelengths.

    With the advent of the Broadband era, the requirements for recording media and device have changed on a large scale. Especially, with the spread of digital broadcasting, digital high vision have started, it has caused a strong desire to provide a system that can write and read the signals in this class. This report is to describe DVR-Blue with optical disc technology, which consists of the combination with GaN laser, HighNA, thin cover layer and recording materials of phase change, and 120mm optical disc with a capacity of 22.5Gbytes and a recording velocity of 35Mbps. Furthermore, a future view is discussed.

    A novel two-dimensional near-field optical system has been studied to realize more effective and simple optical disk of the high memory capacity and fast data transfer rate. This parallel optical memoryis based on a multi-beam recording/reading head and a small spot size using the vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) microprobe array as an evanescent light source. In this research, we have simulated the optical efficiency and spot size of near-field optical heads using the FDTD method and understood the best structuraldesign of pyramidal microprobes having an asymmetric metal coating. The microprobe array head has been also realized using the micro-fabrication processes of Si and GaP wafer with a newly developed apertureformation technique. The research will continue to complete the parallel near-field optical disk of 1000Gbit/in2 data capacity and 10 Gbps transfer rate with the integration of the VCSEL array and microprobe array having high optical efficiency.

    Near-field aperture probes with high optical transmittance efficiency (transmittance) for optical recording and multi-probes with a metal wire as a heater for thermal recording are batch-fabricated by silicon micromachining. The aperture with diameter sizes from 10 to 500 nm at the apex of a SiO2 tip on a Si cantilever is fabricated using a “Low temperature Oxidation & Selective Etching” technique. The SiO2 tip is formed bynonuniform Si wet oxidation at 950°C. The aperture is created at the apex of SiO2 tip by selective etching of SiO2 in a buffered-HF. The aperture shows a high optical transmittance because the SiO2 tip has a large opening angle. This fabrication technique is extended to fabricate a metal nanowire at the apex of the SiO2 tip by embedding a metal into the aperture. By flowing a current into the metal wire, the tip can be heated. This probe array is fabricated, and the basic characteistics are evaluated.

    In this paper, we propose a new method of fabricating evaporative patterns for vacuum molding and precision casting. Powders of exothermic reactive materials and salt are mixed uniformly and thinly spread. An infrared laser beam scans over the layer of these material powders. Chemical reaction occurs in the irradiated area, and the salt powders are melted by chemical reaction heat and laser energy. After the irradiation, the materials solidify and connect to the lower solidified layer. By repeating the powder spreading and the laser scanning, a 3-D model is fabricated. Since the main component of the model is salt, the model is easily removed from the mold by washing with water. In order to prove this theory, simple layered models were made andtheir shapes were transferred to silicone rubber and plaster. Copies of the master models were made by vacuum molding and plaster molding.

    We experimentally demonstrated that flexible shaping in both the phase and amplitude of ultrashort pulses amplified by a regenerative amplifier is obtainable with an acousto-optic programmable dispersion filter (AOPDF), which was located before a pulse stretcher. Because of the wide dynamic range of the AOPDF, gain narrowing during amplification can be pre-compensated by reducing the transmission at the center of a seed pulse spectrum. For a seed pulse spectrum width of 45 nm (FWHM), the amplified spectrum was broadened to -50 nm (FWHM) from -19 nm. Flexible pulse shaping is attainable by programming both the amplitude and phase of the input spectrum by the AOPDF.
