Small lenses were processed in glass plates by the irradiation of carbon-dioxide (CO
2) laser. The localized refractive-index change of glass small lenses were produced by the optical damage within the glass plate. The following results of this research were obtained. 1) At the laser processing, glass plate is preparatively heated to increase over the 300°C for preventing mechanical breakdown. 2) The ellipse form lenses are processed by irradiating the circular-form CO
2laser beam. 3) The maximum refractive-index difference of this lenses are 0.0005-0.005, the focal length are 70-1 cm, the lens radius are 0.3-0.9mm and the residual stress are 1-18 kg/mm
2. Those values are obtained by adjusting the shot number, the energy of CO
2 laser and the temperature of glass plate.
