JOURNAL OPEN ACCESSRecent two-dimensional electronic spectroscopic experiments revealed that electronic energy transfer in photosynthetic light harvesting involves long-lived quantum coherence among electronic excitations of pigments. These findings have led to the suggestion that quantum coherence might play a role in achieving the remarkable quantum effi ciency of photosynthetic light harvesting. Further, this speculation has led to much effort being devoted to elucidation of the quantum mechanisms of the photosynthetic excitation energy transfer. In this review, we provide an overview of recent experimental and theoretical investigations of photosynthetic electronic energy transfer, specifi cally addressing the observed longlived coherence. JOURNAL OPEN ACCESSThis paper reviews our activities on multicore fi bers for extremely large capacity transmission. First, we presented the multicore fiber features with a one-ring structure that was used in a transmission experiment that realized record capacity of 1.01 Pb/s/fi ber. Multicore fi bers with a one-ring structure can overcome three problems with hexagonal close-packed structures. Finally, we presented two approaches to enlarge the core multiplicity. A quasi-homogeneous Aeff heterogeneous multicore fi ber realizes bend insensitivity and very small crosstalk. A few mode multicore fi bers might drastically enlarge the core multiplicity.View full abstractDownload PDF (1525K) -

JOURNAL OPEN ACCESSMulti-core optical fi bers are eagerly developed recently, because they are one of strong candidates to overcome transmission capacity limit of existing optical fi bers. Number of cores and inter-core crosstalk are often highlighted in multi-core optical fiber development, because they are unique parameters of multi-core optical fibers. But, transmission loss and nonlinearity of each core are also important parameters especially for multi-core optical fi bers for long-haul and large capacity transmission systems. In this paper, following brief description of issues and measures to realize a low loss low nonlinearity multi-core optical fiber, an example of design and characteristics of a fabricated multi-core fiber is described. JOURNAL FREE ACCESSAs a fi ber with extreme multiplexing ability, we fabricate seven-core fi ber whose cores can guide two LP modes. This fiber is also suitable for systems with multi-level modulation format due to its low nonlinearity. JOURNAL OPEN ACCESSLens optics technology is reviewed for the design and fabrication of fan-in/fan-out devices to connect a multicore fi ber to single mode fi bers and optical connectors for multicore fi bers. We describe the design principle of lens coupling using spatial beam conversion theory for fan-in/fan-out devices and multicore fi ber connectors and show their optical characteristics. JOURNAL OPEN ACCESSWe demonstrated mode multi/demultiplexing with an asymmetric parallel waveguide for mode division multiplexed transmission, which we designed and fabricated to multiplex the LP01 and LP11 modes. Our fabricated mode multi/demultiplexer realized a low insertion loss of < 0.8dB for the LP01 and LP11 modes. We achieved a 2 mode × 4 wavelength × 10 Gbps MDM-WDM transmission in the C-band over a 9 km-long two-mode fi ber using a waveguide mode multi/demultiplexer with a low insertion loss and highly effi cient mode conversion.View full abstractDownload PDF (588K) -

JOURNAL OPEN ACCESSWe studied the connection of a multi-core fiber (MCF). We fabricated a FC-type connector with a hexagonal-shaped cladding MCF and achieved an average connector loss of 0.51dB. JOURNAL OPEN ACCESSThis report explains the international and Japanese safety standards about the laser equipment. Basic standard is “IEC 60825-1 Safety of laser products” , correspond to JIS C6802. The related standard is “IEC 60601-2-22 Medical electrical equipment - Particular requirements for basic safety and essential performance of surgical, cosmetic, therapeutic and diagnostic laser equipment”. These standards provide the following clause: terms and definitions, general requirements, label, classified class, MPE “Maximum Permissible Exposure” and user's guide.
