The characteristic short-range orders (SROs) in a one-dimensional Ising ferrimagnet, which is composed of alternating spins withdifferent spin quantum numbers, Lande g-factors, and next-nearest-neighbor interactions, are investigated by the numerically exact calculation ofa nonsymmetric transfer matrix.Due to the uncompensating moments, some SROs in the system show very different characteristics from those in the uniform-spin ANNNI chain; (i) the peculiar two-peaked structure of the static spin structure factor {\cal S}(q), indicatingnot two different SROs but the same SRO, and (ii) an unusual thermal recovery of the ferrimagnetic SRO, carrying three disorder points, under a non-zero external field.Decaying features of the characteristic SROs and the magnetic behavior of the system with variation of external field are alsodiscussed.

We analyze the temperature dependence ofthe specific heat and the quadrupole susceptibilityfor CePd_2Al_3, in which the Kondo effect coexistswith the crystalline electric field (CEF) excitation. The calculation is carried out systematicallyby using the numerical renormalization group method. The ratio Δ / T
k^o(Δ: the CEF excitation energy, T_k^o: the Kondo temperature for the fictitious system of Δ= 0)is estimated to be about 1.2 from the data of magnetic specific heat. The observed softening of C
33 mode at very low temperature, which is expected to vanish in hexagonal compound such as CePd
2Al
3from the conventional CEF theory, is explained by considering the Kondo effect.

The magnetic phase diagram of Dy has been determined by the specific heat measurement. The magnetic field up to 17, kOe has been applied along the a-axis which is the easy direction of magnetization. Most of results are in agreement with previous magnetization and magnetoresistance mesurements but new phase boundaries have been found in the present observation. Results indicate that the magnetic structure in “fan” phase may be not a simple structure.

(BEDT-TTF)_3CuBr_4 is a two-dimensional organic conductor whose structure consists of alternate stacking of BEDT-TTF π conducting sheets and magnetic Cu
2+ sheets. We investigate magnetic susceptibility, magnetization and ESR in order to clarify the correlation between the magnetism and the electronic structure.Above a structural transition T
c=59, K, the magnetic susceptibility indicates the presence of strong antiferromagnetic interaction between the π-electrons on BEDT-TTF and the localized d-electrons on Cu
2+.The transition brings about the disappearance of the magnetic moments of BEDT-TTF molecules below T
c, which indicates the change from a Mott insulator to a band insulator state.Below T
c, the susceptibility is governed only by Cu
2+ spins, and shows an antiferromagnetic transition at T
N=7.65, K, where the π-electrons play an important role in the exchange interactions.

The magnetic susceptibility (χ ) and the
51V Knight shift (K) measurements are performed on the perovskite LaVO
3 in the paramagnetic state. By analyzing the K-χ diagram, independent contributions of spin and orbital susceptibilities to the observed one are determined experimentally. The spin susceptibility was found to be suppressed from the Curie-Weiss law for S=1 spins well above the Néel temperature. It was also found that the hyperfine coupling constant for d spin is largely reduced from the usual core-polarization contribution. The analysis based on a local-moment model shows that this reduction may be caused by a large transferred hyperfine coupling between the neighboring V
3+ ions rather than by covalency with O
2- ions. This accounts for all the NMR data rather quantitatively, though, the sign and the magnitude of the transferred hyperfine field are not compatible with any existing microscopic theories.

We have found the high-temperature dielectric anomaly around 130°C (T
p) even on first heating of virgin crystal of ferroelastic ammonium sulfate (NH

2SO
4. It has been observed by using polarizing microscope that after heat treatment above T
p the multigrains appeared in the ferroelastic domain, indicating that the nature of the high-temperature anomaly around T
p is of topochemistry, i.e., not related to the high-temperature phase transition but related to chemical change accompanied by partial thermal decomposition at the surface of crystals. This work suggests the origin of nonexistence of prototypic phase in ferroelastic (NH
4)
2SO

The group-theoretical treatment for photonic bands is given. The symmetry-adapted plane-wave bases are given for the eigenvectors of the electric fields and the transformation properties of the vector spherical-waves are clarified. For a fcc array of dielectric spheres, the group-theoretical band assignment is presented and the result is used to clarify the origins of the difference from band to band, concerning the mixing between transverse and longitudinal components, the activity to an incident light in the reflectivity, the mutual orthogonality of the eigenvectors and so on.Promising application of photonic crystal as a useful polarizer of light is proposed.

High-resolution low-temperature photoemission spectroscopy has been performed for UNi
2Al
3 and URu
2Si
2 to study the nature of 5f electrons in U-based heavy fermion materials. Photoemission spectra of both compounds have a sharp peak at E
F and a large broad peak around 2, eV, while only UNi
2Al
3 exhibits an additional small broad feature at 0.6, eV. The two features in the vicinity of E
F (the E
F-peak and the small structure at 0.6, eV) are found to have a dominant U 5f character while the prominent peak around 2, eV is due to the Ni 3d or Ru 4d states. Comparison with the band structure calculations and experimental results on UPd
2Al
3 suggests that the E
F-peak is ascribed to itinerant U 5f electrons while the following broad feature at 0.6, eV represents localized f electrons.

Depolarized low-frequency Raman spectra of NaCl aqueous solution in the frequency region below 250, cm
-1 have been investigated as a function of temperature. The spectral profiles have been analyzed with a superposition of one Cole-Cole type relaxation mode and two damped harmonic oscillator modes. The reciprocal relaxation time τ
-1 changes linearly as a function of temperature below 320, K, which means that the relaxation time τ obeys Curie-Weiss law. The distribution parameter β in the Cole-Cole type relaxation formula decreases with decreasing temperature. With decreasing temperature the reciprocal relaxation time τ
-1 goes down toward to zero more slowly than that in water, which means that the value of Curie constant of NaCl aqueous solution is larger than that of water.

We study the temperature dependence of the behavior of a polymer chain withstickers by using multicanonical Monte Carlosimulations. For our two-dimensional model, we performedequilibrium calculations and obtained physical quantities at lowtemperatures. We calculated the radius of gyration and the end-to-enddistance and found that those quantities drastically change betweenthe temperature kT/u_0=0.1 and 0.2. As the temperature is lowered, the value of the exponent ν becomes slightly smaller than the high temperature case.We also investigated the distribution of gyration radius and winding angle.

Morphological changes of colonies have been investigated for a bacterial strain of Proteus mirabilis, which is a famous species for producing concentric-ring-like colonies. It was found that colony patterns can be classified into three types, i.e., cyclic spreading, diffusion-limited growth (DLA-like) and three-dimensional growth (inside the agar medium) patterns. Cyclic spreading patterns can further be classified into three subgroups, i.e., concentric-ring, homogeneous and spatiotemporal patterns. These subgroups were classified by examining the development of colony structure after colonies spread all over petri-dishes. Comparison of the results with those of another bacterial species Bacillus subtilis is also discussed.

The growth process of the cholesteric finger pattern, appearing in a large pitch cholesteric liquid crystal sandwiched between glass plates, has been experimentally investigated. Depending on the cell gap and the external electric field, several patterns of different kinds are observed. The characteristic feature of the patterns is extracted from the observed image and then the dynamical behavior of the patterns is discussed. Moreover, the formation process of the dendritic finger pattern is analyzed on the basis of the Avrami model.
