    The purpose of this study is to clarify perceptions of the relationship between daughters-in-law and mothers-in-law, attitudes toward coresidence, their positions and the desirable relationship. The self administered type of survey was conducted to 428 married women in Fukuoka city and Oita city in April to May, 1990. The major findings are as follows :
    1) 82% of the sample regarded them as, either daughters-in-law or mothers-in-law, the former felt their position as unhappy, while the latter felt as happy. The older they are, the less they had such feelings.
    2) About half had positive attitudes forward coresidence with their parents and their eldest son in the future, and over 30% wanted separate living from their children.
    3) 70% of daughters-in-law wanted to change their relationship, while among mothers-in-law the proportions of those who wanted to change and of those who did not were almost the same.
    4) The result of analysis of free-answers shows the discrepancies between their attitude, but the mothers-in-law seems to approach to the daughters-in-law.

    The purpose of Part 4 is to analyze where and with whom the couples living in Setagaya Ward spend their days. This might give an indication of how they can improve their daily lives, enjoy their leisure and spend their lives after retirement. The results were shown by “Place” and “People who they spend time with, ” and these were shown along with the time spent on each activity in order to clarify the couples' relationships.
    The survey was conducted with couples who were residing in Setagaya Ward in September of 1990. It asked how they spent their time and had related questionnaires. An analysis was made based on the responses from 110 couples. The results are;
    1) Wives spend longer hours for “Entertainment, education, culture and sports” than their husbands on weekdays. On weekends, husbands spend more time than their wives for those activities.
    2) Husbands are now tending to spend their time for their hobbies and entertainment at cultural facilities after work.
    3) The length of time that husbands spend with their spouses and children depends on whether wives have jobs or what their work shifts are.
    4) On weekdays wives who have part time jobs spend longer hours with “Friends” and “People at club or circle” than any other persons. On weekends the married couples who both have full time jobs spend their time with “People at club or circle” rather than with other married couples.
    5) It is obvious that the couples have less communication with their neighbors. In other words their life-styles are just like those of people in big cities.

    Influence of wheat gluten diets for pregnant rats on the maternal body and the growth of the newborn pups and supplementary effects of lysine to the wheat gluten diets were studied. Pregnant rats were fed on the wheat gluten diets at protein level of 5% (G5), 10% (G10), 20% (G20) and 30% (G30), and also the diets added with L-lysine at level of 0.4% (G5+L), 0.5% (G10+L), 0.8% (G20+L) and 1.0% (G30+L), respectively. Control was set at 10% protein diet of purified whole egg protein.
    Although all groups of pregnant rats fed on the wheat gluten diets performed pregnancy and delivery, some in the groups of G5, G5+L and G10 showed neonatal death and stunted growth. Significant supplementary effects of lysine were observed in the groups fed on 10% or 20% wheat protein diets with lysine. Newborn pups of groups fed on 20% or 30% wheat protein diets with lysine, and also on 30% sole wheat protein diet showed almost same growth compared to the rats of the control group.

    Optimization of agar column diffusion method was investigated to determine the antibiotic activity of Japanese radish.
    1) Anaerobic growth of the seed bacterium (E. coli) in the agar column was disturbed by nitrate respiration with potassium nitrate in the radish. This respiration was effectively prevented by addition of 0.01% sodium azide to the culture medium.
    2) Favourable concentration of agar in the medium was 0.8% for obtaining the clear boundary of the growth inhibition zone.
    3) Addition of 0.1% Noigen P (polyethylenglycol laurylether) to the culture medium promoted the diffusion of slightly soluble antibiotic.
    4) The composition of improved culture medium was as follows : polypeptone 0.5%, beef extract 0.3%, 0.5% methylenblue 0.01 (v/v), agar 0.8%, sodium azide 0.01% and Noigen P 0.1%. Sodium azide and Noigen P were added together with the seed bacterium after the other constituents were dissolved by heating and cooled at 45°C.

    The effects of pH, sucrose and sodium chloride on the amount of 5'-nucleotides accumulated in dried Shiitake, fruit body of Lentinus edodes, during cooking were examined. The following results were obtained :
    1) The amount of 5'-nucleotides accumulated in Shiitake during cooking was highest at pH 6.3-6.5.
    2) The accumulation of 5'-nucleotides in Shiitake during cooking was suppressed by the addition of sucrose and sodium chloride.
    3) In the presence of sucrose and sodium chloride, the amount of 5'-nucleotides accumulated. in Shiitake during cooking closely correlated with the total amount of 5'-nucleotide and nucleosides in the cooked Shiitake, the amount of water in the cooked Shiitake and the amount of water which was dehydrated from Shiitake during the cooking from 50 to 80°C, but did not correlated with the amount of nucleosides in the cooked Shiitake.

    Fluorescent intensity of cotton fabric whitened to the maximum degree with two typical stilbene type fluorescent brightening agents (FBA) gradually decreased to zero for 500 hr light irradiation, and both visual whiteness and psychometric coordinates a*b* returned to that of unwhitened original fabric. a*b* coordinates of irradiated fabric in CIE color diagram retraced the loci found for the whitened fabric with increasing FBA concentration. Change in the pattern of fluorescent emission spectrum by the irradiation revealed the decrease in trans-isomer fraction of FBA on the fabric. Decay within a short time was larger for the irradiated upper surface than the back surface, and the difference between the two surfaces was proportional to the thickness of the fabric.
    Over-dyed fabric exceptionally increased in the whiteness within a short time, which may be related to the decrease in the reabsorption of the fluorescence, caused by cis-isomerization of the excess FBA on fiber surface. Considerable yellowing was recognized on over-dyed fabric after 500 hr exposure, suggesting the formation of carbonyl derivatives by photooxidation.

    We classified the shapes of women's lower bodies by cluster analysis. There were 2 separate groups of subjects. The first group was 100 young women (18-21 years old), and the second group was 300 women consisted of 100 young women, 100 middle aged women (35-59 years old) and 100 elderly women (60-75 years old). This is an 8-point scale for classification of women's lower bodies, as follows : 1. hip girth/waist girth, 2. middle hip girth/hip girth, 3. front middle hip girth/back middle hip girth, 4. front hip girth/back hip girth, 5. crotch depth/stature, 6. hip depth/crotch depth, 7. total crotch length/stature, 8. hip slope.
    The results obtained were summarized as follows :
    1) The shape of the lower body was determined by the main 3-points. The first point was difference of the waist and hip size, the second point was size of middle hip, the last point was front hip girth/back hip girth.
    2) Young women have 3 types, whereas, women have 6 types of lower bodies.

    In this report we analyzed the housing imagery of Japanese urban residents. We selected owner-occupied detached house, condominium, low-rented wooden apartment house and high-rented apartment house as typical urban housing types.
    The findings of our surveys are as follows;
    1) The housing imagery shown in the owner-occupied detached house residents is mainly the owner-occupied wooden detached houses.
    2) The housing imagery of condominium residents divides into comdominiums and rental apartment houses, but about 60% of them support wooden houses.
    3) Residents in wooden apartment houses are not likely to be so much interested in housing imagery and their housing imagery are various.
    4) A new life-styles are recognized in high-rented apartment house residents and they choose their houses according to thier life-styles. They attach much importance to the convenience rather than the possession of houses.
    Many surveys of public opinion about housing suggest that Japanese people are found of the owner-occupied wooden detached houses, but in our surveys the urban residents' housing imagery is influenced by their houses they live. We suggest that housing imagery of urban residents will change according to the diversity of housing types which are supplied.
