    Tuberous roots of yacon (Polymnia sonchifolia) contain a large amount of oligofructans. So, they draw great attention as a healthful diet. Powder of tuberous roots and tea of leaves are commercially sold.
    Establishment of yacon cultivation technique is now a necessity. But the effect of topdressing on growth and yield of yacon has not yet been tested.
    Effects of topdressing were tested in 1993 and 1994.
    Results as follows:
    1) Tops of yacon grew vigorously and stem numbers increased by topdressing.
    2) Total yield of tuberous roots did not increase by topdressing.
    3) Yield of tuberous roots exceeding 300-400g decreased by topdressing.
    4) Topdressing has little effect on yield of tuberous roots in the tested.

    Tuberous roots of yacon (Polymnia sonchifolia) contain a large amount of oligofructans. So, they draw great attention as a healthful diet, and powder of the tuberous roots and tea of the leaves of yacon are sold already. But reports concerning the cultivation of yacon are few, and the injuries to the yield by continuous cropping has not been tested yet.
    So, we compared the growth and yield of yacon in two fields; in one field yacon was replanted for four years (continuous cropping field) and in the other field yacon was replanted for three years followed by no cultivation for one year (no-cultivation field).
    Three experimental plots were made on each field; soil disinfection plot, plowing plot replacing surface soil with subsoil and usual cultivation plot.
    Results as follows:
    1) Main stems grew more vigorously in the continuous cropping field than in the no-cultivation field.
    2) Number of stems per plant was higher in the no-cultivation field.
    3) Top weight of yacon from each plots in the continuous cropping field had a tendency to be heavier than that from the plots in the no-cultivation field. But, in the no-cultivation field, top weight in the soil disinfection plot was heavier than the other two plots.
    4) In the no-cultivation field, total weight of tuberous roots 100g exceeding were low in the plowing plot replacing surface soil with subsoil and the usual cultivation plot.
    5) Thickening of tuberous roots were inferior in the no-cultivation field.
    6) Correlation between the fresh weight of tuberous roots and the top fresh weight was r=0.94.
    7) We concluded that yacon is not subject to injury by continuous cropping.
  • 全量基肥施用による省力性・収量安定性・耐病性の検討

    This examination was conducted in order to establish the method of low imput non-split fertilizer application in transplanting culture of rice with high level stability. Single spplication oftotal nitrogen with slow release coated-fertilizer at pudding (LPS-plot) was compared with a conventional application method using easily released nitrogen fertilizer, for both basal and top-dressing (Control-plot). The results obtained were as follows; 1) The growth of rice on LPS-plot was relatively inferior to that of Control-plot in tillering stage, but the amount of nitrogen uptake of rice plants on LPS-plot increased rapidly after maximum tiller number stage, with a higher percentage of fruitful culms and numerous spikelets per panicle. As a result, number of spikelets per square meter of LPS-plot was adequate for desirable yield. 2) nitrogen uptake of rice plants in panicle formation stage led to extend the upper internodes and the upper lamina instead of the lower internodes which is highly related to lodging. This seems to be related to raising the percentage of ripened grains by improving the stand geometry of rice plant on LPS-plot at ripening period. 3) The process of nitrogen uptake of rice plants from coated-fertilizer shifted to the later stage in 1993 with a cool summer, and to the earlier stage in 1994 with a hot summer. But it was within the acceptable range for the formation of growing behaviour of rice plants. Therefore it was confirmed that slow release coated-fertilizer is adaptable in various weather years. 4) Efficiency of fertilizing on LPS-plot was improved by the range of 20% to 40% preventing the applicated nitrogen from erosion. 5) Morbidity of the Sheath blight, Thanatephorus cucumeris (Frank) Donk on LPS-plot was lowered. From the foregoing, we conclude that the using of slow release coated-fertilizer with a method of non-split fertilizer application in transplanting culture is effective in establishing the low input and low labor culture.

    A 5-years study was conducted to evaluate a notillage and mulching farming system incorporated with fruit cropping. This paper presents some influences of preceding cropping and six mulch and tillage methods on growth and yield of some crops and physical and chemical properties of the soil.
    1) An effect of preceding cropping on top growth of succeeding cropping was apparent after cultivating leguminous crops followed by continuous cropping of gramineous crops.
    2) Mulching and no-tillage treatment (MNT) induced significantly greater top growth of Japanese apricot, persimmon and some intercrops than incorporating rotary tilling treatment (IRT). Similarly, much mulching and no-tillage treatment (MMNT) induced greater growth than much mulching and rotary tilling (MMRT).
    3) Roots grew deeper, more fine roots and higher respiratory capacity was seen in MNT than in IRT.
    4) Japanese apricot tended to have greater fruit weight and yield in MNT than in IRT.
    5) Soil hardness of MNT was higher than IRT only in the upper soil zone.
    6) Soil pH decreased by more tillage and cultivation.
    7) soil nutrient uptake activity seemed to be higher in MNT-system. But no clear relationship between growth of crops and chemical properties of soil was seen.
