    In America and Europpe oats are used as an ingredient of horse and poultry feeds.
    On the other hand, in Japan they are usud as horse feed only. But recently they are adopting as a crop in some regions and it is expected that there will be an increase of oats production. Therefore, nutritive value of oats as an ingredient of poultry feed is demanded and whole oats (heavy oats, 850gr, per sho) and oats bran were used in place of whole wheat in the chick rations of our experiment.
    Gain of body weight mortality, feed intake, feed utilization and etc, were observed.
    Summary.
    1) Growth results indicate that whole wheat may be replaced with whole oats or oats bran,
    2) There was little difference in mortality at levels of 25-27% of oats or oats bran in the rations,
    3) The presence of the “Cannibalism-preventing factor” was not confirmed in our 6 week experimental period,

    Observation on enriched-flavin in starchy foods were as follows:
    1) Both to amylose and amylopectine, flavin adsorption were not observed.
    2) As Flavin is not adsorbable to starch therefore, bread, biscuits and rice is appropriate for vitamin B2-enrichment, but in the case of noodle foods such as “udon”, it is possible to lose the enriched vitamin B2 depending on cooking condition, to which consideration will have to be paid.

  • Report II When the Vegetale Oil was Used

    In this experiment the vegetable oil (soybean oil) was used as source of fat component of the experimental high-fat diet in place of the butter fat used in the previous experiment (Report I, Jap. J. Nut., 12, 62, 1955). The fat content in high-fat diet was 34 per cent of the ingested total calories as shown in table I. The experimental periods were divided into following threeperiods: at first high-carbohydrate diet for 3 days, next high-fat diet for 5 days, and at last high-carbohydrate diet for 2 days. During these periods the running of about 7500 meters on the treadmill was performed for 50 minutes after 3 hours of breakfast every day, as shown in table 2. The other experimental methods were the same as in previous experiment.
    The results obtained were as follows:
    1) In comparison of the work metabolism in high-fat diet period with that in high-carbohydrate diet period, there was no difference in O2 consumption per the same amount of work, volume of expired air and CO2 production were less, accordingly respiratory zuotient lower in high-fat period, as shown in table 3. These results coincided with the previous experiment. It seems that the high fat diet acts favourably upon the work metabolism, as described in previous report.
    2) Amounts of urinary acetone bodies per day were in the range of normal value in the previous experiment using the butter fat of about 30 per cent calories, but in this experiment using the vegetable oil of about the same amount as butter the urinary acetonebodies increased apparently as shown in figure 1 and table 4.
    It is concluded from the results that high fat diet has an availability to the work metabolism, however the content of the fat of 30 percent calories in the diet is over the optimum amount for Japanese when the vegetable oil was used.

  • The First Report: Studies on the Relationship Between Compositions of Diet and Intestinal Bacteria of Rais (part 1)

    It has been clearly testified that intestinal bacteria exsists in human body is not only homonym and parastical but is also nutrious and healthful for the human body.
    A number of people has investigated regarding to the intestinal bacteria, but there are rather few of investigations which discovered especially the frequency of appearance and the detailed importance of different types of Bactera.
    Author has done the experiments on frequency of intestinal bacteria of rats by using foods composed of a amount of casein or albumin, which are both proteins, and according to the amount of protein, individual of dextrin, lactose, sucrose, or glucose, which are all carbohydrates.
    For the next research, intestinal bacteria fed in the diet composed of some amount of fat or oil and in accordance with its amount, sucrose or lactose individually, was investigated.
    The intestinal bacteria, which my investigations have been made by using with are Escherichia coli type, Aerobacter, Streptococci, Enterococci, and also Clostridium welchii.
