    The sensitivities of 4 unicellular microalgal strains to 14 rice herbicides were determined. After comparing the hazard and exposure data of herbicide concentration in rivers, it was clear that certain amide, triazine and sulfonylurea herbicides pose a relatively high ecological risk to Japanese aquatic ecosystems. To investigate in further detail the adverse effects of triazine herbicides on riverine native algal growth and to discover the relation between the diatom community and the use of herbicides, we compared the sensitivities of native attached diatoms (ADs) to triazine herbicides. Consequently, it became apparent that diatoms unresponsive to triazine herbicides were widely distributed in Japanese rivers.

    Octopamine, tyramine and dopamine are physiologically important biogenic amines in insect peripheral and nervous tissues. The interactions of these amines with their specific receptors primarily up- or downregulate adenylate cyclase via the Gs or Gi subunit, respectively, leading to an increase or decrease in the levels of the second messenger cAMP within cells. These G-protein-coupled receptors are attractive targets for insecticides. This study performed functional and pharmacological characterizations of each biogenic amine receptor using heterologous expression systems for the cloned receptors of the silkworm, Bombyx mori. Such study may aid in the development of specific insecticides or insectistatics that target biogenic amine receptors.
