The synthetic route for a halo-substituted thiophenylethyl variant of blasticide carpropamid is described. First, halo-substituted acetylthiophene was homologated to thiophenylacetic acid using Pb(OAc)₄ and BF₃OEt₂, followed by reduction to CH₂CH₂OH with NaBH₄/I₂ or BH₃Me₂S, and then to the azide via the tosylate. The azide was transformed to the amine using triphenylphosphine, which was then allowed to react with the corresponding acyl chloride to yield the final amide product. Fungicidal tests of 50 related products for gray mold and downy mildew on cucumber, and leaf rust and powdery mildew on wheat were conducted in 500 mg/l on pot. Many compounds showed efficacy to control these plant diseases. It should be noted that several blasticide-oriented compounds displayed high control effectiveness on downy mildew.

Sequence analysis of cDNA clones amplified from para-sodium channel α-subunit transcripts of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella L., identified a new optional exon derived from exon 24. Furthermore, mutually exclusive exons 26a and 26b were found to be optionally spliced at low frequency. The occurrence of each alternative exon was examined at different developmental stages using strains showing different sensitivities to a pyrethroid. Results showed that alternative exon usage might be developmentally regulated and divergent among strains. No alternative exon possibly involving pyrethroid resistance was detected.

A number of ethyl 4-[(1-substituted indol-2-yl)methoxy]benzoates and indoline derivatives were prepared as rigid congeners of ethyl 4-(2-benzylhexyloxy)benzoate (KF-13), an anti-juvenile hormone (anti-JH) agent, and tested for both anti-JH and JH activities in silkworm larvae. In contrast to KF-13, the precocious metamorphosis-inducing activity of which decreased by increasing the applied doses, 1-n-propyl, 1-n-butyl (1c) and 1-benzyl (1d) derivatives were found to induce higher percentages of precocious metamorphosis at high doses. Compounds 1c and 1d also exhibited JH activity when topically applied to allatectomized 4th instar larvae. Ethyl 4-[(S)-(1-n-butylindolin-2-yl)methoxy]benzoate, which showed precocious metamorphosis-inducing activity at high doses, had no JH activity.

Three monoenyl compounds were detected in GC/MS analysis of a hexane extract of pheromone glands from virgin female Acrolepiopsis sapporensis. They were identified as (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate (Z11-16:Ac), (Z)-11-hexadecenal (Z11-16:Ald) and (Z)-11-hexadecenol (Z11-16:OH), respectively, by chemical derivatization and synthesis of both geometric isomers. The ratio of three components in the sex pheromone gland of female moths was 100 : 10 : 23 with GC/MS analyses. In field tests, blends of the three components were evidenced to attract male moths in a Welsh onion field. Synthetic (Z)-11-hexadecenal was the principal component to catch more males.

The sensitivities of 4 unicellular microalgal strains to 14 rice herbicides were determined. After comparing the hazard and exposure data of herbicide concentration in rivers, it was clear that certain amide, triazine and sulfonylurea herbicides pose a relatively high ecological risk to Japanese aquatic ecosystems. To investigate in further detail the adverse effects of triazine herbicides on riverine native algal growth and to discover the relation between the diatom community and the use of herbicides, we compared the sensitivities of native attached diatoms (ADs) to triazine herbicides. Consequently, it became apparent that diatoms unresponsive to triazine herbicides were widely distributed in Japanese rivers.

Octopamine, tyramine and dopamine are physiologically important biogenic amines in insect peripheral and nervous tissues. The interactions of these amines with their specific receptors primarily up- or downregulate adenylate cyclase via the G_s or G_i subunit, respectively, leading to an increase or decrease in the levels of the second messenger cAMP within cells. These G-protein-coupled receptors are attractive targets for insecticides. This study performed functional and pharmacological characterizations of each biogenic amine receptor using heterologous expression systems for the cloned receptors of the silkworm, Bombyx mori. Such study may aid in the development of specific insecticides or insectistatics that target biogenic amine receptors.
