Simple empirical rules are in existence on the (σexp⁄σsm), the ratio of the experimental cross section for p-p and p-n quasifree scattering (QFS) to the one calculated with the spectator model. (1) The ratio for p-n QFS, (σexp⁄σsm)p1−n2, depends only on the relative energy En2−p3 between scattered neutron and spectator proton, namely (σexp⁄σsm)p1−n2=f(En2−p3). (2) The ratio for p-p QFS, (σexp⁄σsm)p1−p2 depends on the relative energies Ep1−n3 and Ep2−n3 and is expressed by a product form of the same function for p-n QFS, namely (σexp⁄σsm)p1−p2=f(Ep1−n3f(Ep2−n3). (3) Further, the function f(E) is expressed by the deuteron wave function in momentum space.

An approximate variational method of calculating the ground state energy of the Hubbard model is presented. The method is based on the trial wave function of Wigner. The result for the one-dimensional model is good compared with other approximate results. The extension of the method to finite temperatures is straightforward.

The critical behaviour of the correlation function of the Ising model with a transverse field, Δ, is investigated by means of the perturbation expansions. Exact expressions for the coefficients up to seventh order in JkT (J the exchange interaction) are given as functions of ΔkT for the quadratic, triangular, simple cubic, body-centerd cubic and face-centerd cubic lattices. The universality of the critical index for the correlation length is concluded.

The square Ising ferromagnet is investigated by computer simulation in the region of competing interactions (nearest-neighbor interaction K>0 and second-neighbor one K′<0). Spontaneous magnetization M0 and energy E are calculated from advanced Monte Carlo calculations. The estimates of M0 and of the Curie point Tc(K′⁄K) determined by analyzing the data on E are compared with the results from analysis of low-temperature series based on the assumption β=1⁄8. The values of Tc(K′⁄K) are obtained from padé-approximant method for low-temperature series. The value of β does not vary from the Onsager’s value 1/8.

A modified type of nonlinear Schrödinger (NS) equation of the form
    iαt(x,t)+Pαxx(x,t)+(1−r)[Qα(x,t)|α(x,t)|2+Rα(x,t)(|α(x,t)|2)xx]
    rα(x,t)ω∫0tdt′sinω(t′−t)[Q|α(x,t′)|2+R(|α(x,t′)|2)xx]=0
which describes the coherent propagation of Frenkel type excitons in one-dimensional lattice is derived and numerically solved with pure NS soliton initial conditions. Symbols α, ω and r represent respectively coherent amplitude of excitons, optical phonon frequency and the ratio of phonon-induced nonlinearity to total nonlinearity. In the limit R→0 and ω→∞, this equation becomes the pure NS equation. For R\gtrsimP solitons damp or become unstable which corresponds physically either large exciton-exciton interaction or large exciton-phonon interaction or sufficiently high temperature. Finite ω causes slowing down of soliton velocity. Pulsation of bound solitons tends to decrease. Bound solitons are more stable than one soliton.

A model of the spin-lattice relaxation time T in the rotating frame for tunneling ammonium ions is proposed. It is shown that T is influenced by the symmetry of the hindering potential about the ammonium ion and by the tunneling splittings which do not affect T1. We show a possibility that T is independent of the strength of rf field H1 in the case of ammonium ion as in methyl-group. The relation between the present model and classical theory is also discussed.

The investigation is carried out of the upper critical field Hc2 of a superconducting alloy in the case where an appreciable variation of the transition temperature Tc is observed on alloying. It is assumed that the density of states is not a smooth function of energy at and near the Fermi level and that the BCS coupling parameter is anisotropic. It turns out that the shift of Fermi level on alloying does not modify the expression for Hc2 usually employed if one interprets Tc and Fermi velocity in the expression as those of the alloy. It is also discussed that a recent investigation by Teichler on the effect of anisotropic coupling ignores an important term.
For the case of Nb–Ta system, it becomes clear that the shift of Fermi level is small enough so that Fermi velocity remains constant even though there exists a large variation in Tc with alloying. Qualitative discussions are given on the effect of anisotropic coupling, and it turns out that more detailed experimental investigations are needed to clarify the importance of this effect.

The magnetic susceptibility was measured for NixCd(1−x)(NH3)2·Ni(CN)4·2C6H6 series from x=1.0 to x=0.36. The Weiss temperature for each x was determined in the temperature region between 14 K and 20 K. It varies linearly with x within the experimental error. The Néel temperature TN(x) was defined from the inflection point of χT curve. Thus obtained TN(x) agrees very well with that determined from specific heat measurement above xc=0.65. The xc is the critical concentration at which the phase transition point disappears at finite temperature region. [Tmaxχ(susceptibility maximum)−TN] increases with decreasing of x and has the extreme at xc in xcx≤1. This result shows that the short range order in TTN(x) develops by the effect of the magnetic dilution in xcx≤1.

The zero-bias resistance has been measured on ensembles of tunneling-coupled fine particles of Sn with the average diameter ranging 1250–2700 Å over the temperature region of 1.5–4.2 K. In these ensembles, the interparticle coupling can be varied independently of the particle size. As the interparticle coupling becomes weak, the resistive transition temperature, T0, becomes sizably lower than Tc of the particles. The behavior of the resistance above T0 is explained by the fluctuations of the Josephson current by use of a correction parameter for the electrical capacitance between particles. The shift of T0 is inversely proportional to the coupling energy between particles. As the particle size decreases, the charging energy of a particle seems to bring about lowering of T0.

The plastic flow in hcp 4He was investigated by using a new equipment which was designed to improve the accuracy of measurements. The pronounced yield drop is always observed at moderately low temperatures or in high speed tests, but the yield drop becomes almost undetectable in low speed tests at high temperatures, where the steady flow stress is proportional to one fourth power of the flow rate. At low temperatures and at high pressures flattened upper yield points are observed frequently, and the steady flow stress becomes independent of the flow rate in low speed tests.

Magnetic measurements on the single crystal RGa intermetallic compounds (R=Pr, Nd, Sm, Tb, Dy, Ho and Er) have been carried out in the 4.2 K to 350 K temperature range. All the compounds, except ErGa, are ferromagnetism with high coercive force along the easy direction. ErGa compound is antiferromagnetism. The magnetization curves for the heavy rare earth compounds were fairly well explained on the basis of the molecular field model, including the crystal field. But, for light rare earth compounds, the agreements between the experimental and the calculated values were not so good. Crystal field parameters B20 and B22 were determined from the anisotropy of paramagnetic Curie temperatures on the basis of the molecular field theory. These parameters were compared with those of the point charge model.

In order to determine the magnetic moment of each constituent atom in bcc ternary iron alloys Fe(CoMn) and Fe(CoCr), measurements of the bulk magnetization, Mössbauer spectra of 57Fe nuclei and NMR spin echo spectra of 59Co nuclei have been made for each sample in entire bcc concentration ranges. It is concluded that the Co moment in both alloy systems remains nearly constant being 1.8 μB and that Fe moment in Fe(CoMn) alloys is determined uniquely as a function of the number of 3d-electrons, while Fe moment in Fe(CoCr) alloys is not. It is inferred that Mn atom in Fe(CoMn) alloys has parallel magnetic moment to the bulk magnetization and Cr atom in Fe(CoCr) antiparallel magnetic moment.

Spectral change of the exciton absorption lines in YCrO3 observed during the field-induced spin reorientation (SR) is investigated. The energy shift of the center of gravity of the four exciton lines during the SR is calculated. It is shown that the change of the spin-orbit coupling energy during the SR plays an important role in the energy shift. The change of the observed total intensities of the exciton lines in each polarization in the whole range of the SR is calculated by taking into account the tilting of the CrO6 octahedron from the undistorted perovskite structure. The result is in fair agreement with experiments. Finally the energy transfer matrix elements are determined from the moments of the observed energies and intensities by choosing appropriately the phases of the basic wavefunctions.

The ESR spectra of Pb3+ ions in cubic PbF2 crystals produced by irradiation with γ-rays and neutrons at low temperatures have been studied. Besides a large hyperfine structure from 207Pb nucleus a complex superhyperfine structure due to the interactions with surrounding F and Pb nuclei is observed. From Breit-Rabi diagram the hyperfine splitting constant A(207Pb) can be determined; its reduction with regard to the free ion value is discussed. From the measured angular dependence of the superhyperfine structure the principal values A(F)⁄⁄, A(F) and a(207Pb) of the SHF-tensors are obtained. This induced ESR can be bleached thermally at around 175 K.

The stress relaxation rate in four-point bending of CdS single crystals has been found to be suppressed by irradiation of 25 keV electron beam. In contrast with the ordinary irradiation hardening, the present irradiation hardening effect, which is named “cathodoplastic effect”, is reversible in the sense that the hardening occurs only while specimens are being irradiated with the electron beam. An in situ observation of dislocation motion was carried out by using the scanning electron microscope the electron-beam probe of which was used also for the electron irradiation on specimens. The comparison of the observation of dislocation motion with the stress relaxation curve shows that the cathodoplastic effect in CdS is attributed to a deceleration of dislocations by the electron-beam irradiation.

The ferroelastic properties of TSCC in the orthorhombic phase can be explained if the existence of a hypothetical hexagonal phase is assumed just as in the case of (NH4)2SO4. The space group of the hypothetical phase is inferred to be D6h3–P63/mcm, in which sarcosine molecules are in disordered state, occupying either one of two stable states with equal probability.

The phase diagram and the characteristics of β-δ, β-γ, γ-δ phase transitions of NH4Cl1−xBrx mixed crystal system were determined by the dielectric measurement. It was found that the triple point at x=0.06 and the tricritical point at x=0.26 existed, and that an increase of both the transition temperature and the thermal hysteresis were observed near the triple point. At the tricritical point the order of β-γ transition changed from the first to the second with the increase of x. An attempt was made to explain qualitatively the anomalous critical phenomena near the triple point and the appearance of the tricritical point by a phenomenological treatment assuming the existence of the resonance coupling through the elastic strain between two disordering modes of pseudospin, one at Brillouin zone center and the other at zone boundary.

The Stark effects in F center emission have been investigated for KBr, KI, RbBr, and RbI crystals as a function of emission wave-length and polarization, electric field amplitude, and sample temperature, with using a PbS IR detector. Observed results are qualitatively similar to those measured by Bogan and Fitchen for several other alkali halides. The Stark polarization and the first moment change (a red shift) of the emission band are quadratic in electric field strength; their coefficients are tabulated. Two different theoretical forms of the temperature dependence of the Stark polarization P(T), which have been derived by Bogan and Fitchen, and Ham and Grevsmühl, respectively, are found to be invalid to explain the experimental data consistently. A phenomenological form to describe P(T) is proposed by introducing a new parameter.

The method of calculating the final state of the K-emission and the X-ray p-photoelectron emission in transition-metal compounds are shown. The p-d Coulomb and exchange interactions are expressed in terms of matrix elements for the two-electron system of the p- and d-electrons by using the coefficients of fractional parentage, CFP. An approximation which makes manageable the 3p-hole problem of the transition-metal compounds presented and its validity is discussed. By comparing the 3p-photoelectron emission spectrum of trivalent chromium compounds calculated by the use of this approximation with the experiment, the cubic field strength is determined to be a little larger than 3 eV and the reduction factors for the p-d Coulomb and exchange interactions to be unity, showing the hole-induced covalency to be small for the t2g orbital.

The short range configuration of oxygen atoms in a TiO0.42 crystal has been studied by analyses of X-ray and neutron diffuse scattering. The diffuse scattering is distributed on the planes normal to the c* axis around most of the reciprocal lattice points of HK=3n, L=odd and HK=3n±1, L≠0. The diffuse scattering around each point has a hexagonal symmetry in the L=odd planes just above the interstitial order-disorder transition temperature 575°C. The intensity maximum becomes circular and shifts gradually apart from the reciprocal lattice point with increasing temperature. The intensity distributions are interpreted in terms of the correlative configuration of out-of-steps of the oxygen distribution accompanying the static distortion of titanium lattice.

The analysis of these frequencies and that of the 31,2–31,3 line observed by Takami and Shimoda shows that the rotational levels in the v1=1 state cannot be fitted to the usual asymmetric rotor pattern. The double resonance effect has also been observed by saturating the rotational transitions in the ground vibrational state. Photon counting autocorrelation functions of light scattered from solutions of muscle F-actin were measured by use of a 128 channel digital correlator. Measured correlation functions showed highly non exponential decay, which came mainly from the existence of very slow decay components, much slower than 1 s−1. These slow decay components were observed not to produce the occupation number fluctuation. The average decay rate, \barΓ, dispersion, μ2⁄\barΓ2, and skewness, μ3⁄\barΓ3, obtained by the cumulant expansion method were strongly dependent on the channel width of the correlator, and on the position in, and preparation of the solution.
These results were discussed in relation to the existence of aggregates and exponential length distribution of actin filaments. It was shown that, in highly polydisperse samples, correlation functions should be measured at various channel widths, and that apparent non reproducibility of the results could be avoided by plotting the parameters against the mean counting rate.

A non-linear time-dependent equation for the director distortion is derived with a one-dimensional treatment. Solving this equation numerically under a periodic boundary condition, the followings are described: i) the growth of the director distortion due to sudden application of the electric field above threshold and ii) the distortion distribution and the flow velocity distribution in the steady convective state. It is found that the present approach is useful to understand the behaviours of the system under the electric field above threshold.

A general theory is presented for the diffusion of a multi-ion species plasma across magnetic field due to electrostatic fluctuations. It is shown that the diffusion flux due to wave-particle interactions is not necessarily proportional to the density gradient of the particle species of interest. The result is applied to the impurity diffusion due to those drift waves which exist in a single ion-species plasma. The dominant nonlinear effect is the induced scattering of waves on ions and the resulting diffusion constant of the host ions is given by the Kadomtsev formula, D∼γ2k2ω, where γ, ω and k are respectively the growth rate, frequency and wavenumber of the drift wave. The impurity diffusion constant is positive (or negative) if the impurity Larmour radius is smaller (or greater) than the host-ion Larmour radius, and becomes greater than the host diffusion constant if the spectrum is localized to the unstable region.

The effect of the dispersion due to the radial motion of bubbles on the choking of a bubbly liquid flow in a convergent-divergent nozzle is considered both numerically and analytically by using perturbation solutions. For the subsonic upstream flow, the oscillator flow appears downstream behind the throat as the flow rate approaches the critical value. Beyond the critical value, it changes critically to different type of flow, in which the pressure decreases monotonically to the negative value. The transition between two types of flows is inferred from the integral curves in the phase plane. A similar procedure is applied to the case of the supersonic upstream flow.

Evaporation and condensation of a slightly rarefied vapor gas between concentric cylinders and spheres are investigated on the basis of the linearized BKW (or BGK) equation and the diffuse reflection boundary condition.
The reverse temperature gradient, negative heat and mass flows exist as in the parallel two-surface problem. The effects of the surface curvature, the normal stress other than pressure and the rarefaction on the above phenomenon as well as on the field distributions are also investigated.

Kolmogoroff’s spectrum in homogeneous turbulence is studied by means of a renormalization-group approach. The present analysis is based on Hopf’s equation for the characteristic functional. It consists of two steps: renormalization of small eddies into big ones and rescaling of physical quantities. As the result, Kolmogoroff’s spectrum is shown to be a scaling law in the inertial subrange.

A linearized Navier-Stokes equation governing the two-dimensional viscous incompressible flow impinging on an infinite flat plate is suggested to investigate the time-dependent flow structure and the wall shear stress near the stagnation point. It can be shown that this equation yields a simple analytical solution for the steady Hiemenz flow, which is very close to the exact solution first derived numerically by Hiemenz. Therefore, it is expected that for unsteady Hiemenz flows this equation describes the flow structure as well. Perturbed solutions for a pulsatile Hiemenz flow directed normally and obliquely to the plane wall are calculated in analytical forms when the amplitude of pulsation is small, and show some essential features of the pulsatile flow near the stagnation point.

The stability of the high frequency mode wave propagating in a two-mode nonlinear transmission line is analysed, and the condition is found under which it decays into a pair of low frequency and high frequency waves through parametric interaction. Two limiting cases (resonant decay instability and modified decay instability) are considered, and for each case the wave number region and the maximum growth rate of the unstable modes are determined.

Nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which describes the nonlinear modulation of dispersive torsional waves in an elastic rod of circular cross-section, is derived by the derivative expansion method. It is found, for the lowest dispersive mode, that the modulational instability occurs except in the range of the carrier wavenumber, 2.799<k<3.032. However, at the critical wavenumber where the fundamental and its second-harmonic waves can propagate simultaneously, the second-harmonic resonance takes place and then the nonlinear Schrödinger equation is no longer valid. In this case, another system of equations is derived, which governs both the wave amplitudes involved in this resonance between the fundamental torsional and its second-harmonic longitudinal modes.

Low temperature specific heat measurements were made for the pseudobinary Laves phase intermetallic compounds Y(Fe1−xCox)2. The concentration dependence of the electronic specific heat coefficient γ, which shows a similar behavior to that of the bcc Fe–Co alloys, is discussed in connection with the magnetic properties of the pseudobinary system. The observed extraordinary high γ value for x=0.9, which is near the critical concentration for the onset of ferromagnetism, is probably due to the spin fluctuations.

Two-quantum rotary echoes predicted by Bloch like equations for two-quantum transition have been observed in a multi-level NMR system of 27Al nuclei in Al2O3. An rf field exactly at resonance to the two-quantum transition (Δm=2) was turned on at t=0 and its phase was shifted by 90° at t=τ. The echo at t=2τ was observed by using the technique of transfer of coherence reported previously. Characteristic dependence of the echo width upon inhomogeneity of rf field amplitude was confirmed experimentally.

Lithium clusters containing up to 15 atoms were prepared by evaporation in an inert gas at a pressure of 10−4∼10−3 Torr and the mass numbers of these clusters were measured by a mass analyzer. The following are the main results. i) In good vacuum lithium was detected as single atoms. ii) When an inert gas was present, Li2, Li4, Li6 and Li8 were always detected; however, Li3 and Li5 were never detected. Li7 and Li9 were detected in smaller amounts than those of neighbouring clusters. iii) In the range Li10 to Li15 all possible clusters were detected and Li13 was most abundant among them.

A theoretical analysis is made of the flow of an incompressible viscous liquid through a rotating straight pipe of circular cross section flowing under the influence of a pressure gradient oscillating sinusoidally in time. The governing equations are linearised by an expansion valid for small values of the Taylors number. A solution involving numerical evaluation of finite Hankel transforms is presented for arbitrary values of the parameter α=a(ω⁄ν)1⁄2. The secondary flow is examined in detail for various values of α.
