The ground-state properties of the one-dimensional spin-1/2 alternating Heisenberg-Ising antiferromagnet are studied both analytically and numerically. The phase diagram is qualitatively predicted by the use of the phase Hamiltonian: The ground state is either the Néel or the effective singlet state according to the values of the alternation and anisotropy parameters. The phase transition between these states is of the first order. The ground state energy, its derivative with respect to the alternation parameter, excitation gap, and the various long-range order parameters are exactly calculated by the numerical method for finite systems (N≤20). The numerical calculations support the analytically predicted phase diagram. The correlation length is also numerically calculated at finite temperatures by the use of the quantum transfer-matrix method.

The first-order Suhl instability in the two-dimensional ferromagnet K2CuF4 is investigated at the frequency of 8.9 GHz and at the temperature of 1.4 K. The spin-wave relaxation is derived from the threshold for spin-wave instability by the three-magnon splitting process which results in the annihilation of a k=0 magnon and the creation of a pair of magnons having wave vectors k and −k. Spin-wave linewidth in the [100] direction is very large compared with other directions in the c-plane.

The zero field 153Eu, 3Li and 1H NMR in a cubic perovskite ferromagnet EuLiH3 (Tc=37 K) have been observed as functions of temperature and pressure. The 153Eu and 7Li NMR frequencies are 123.4 and 7.95 MHz at 4.2 K, respectively, corresponding to the effective fields Hi=−266.4 and +4.80 kOe, and a broad 1H NMR is observed in the frequency range between 20 and 46 MHz. The nearest neighbour exchange constant of J1=0.83 K is obtained by fitting 153ν(T) to the spin wave theory. The transferred hyperfine (thf) field at Eu nuclei is derived as H1=+5.2 kOe per n.n. Eu2+ ion by estimating the core polarization field from the hyperfine splitting of the Eu2+ ESR in diamagnetic SrLiH3. The pressure dependence of ∂Hi⁄∂P=0.246 kOe/kbar for 153Eu is attributed to an increase of H1 under pressure.

A sharp peak of dielectric constant which appears at the phase transition between chiral smectic-C and smectic-A phases is found to become clear under dc bias field and in thin cells in which the Goldstone mode originated from the fluctuation of azimuthal angle of molecular long axis corresponding to the winding and unwinding motions of helix characteristic to ferroelectric liquid crystal is suppressed.
The temperature Tm where dielectric constant shows maximum is found to increase under dc bias field E corresponding to the field induced ferroelectric phase at higher temperature than T0 (Curie temperature under no bias field) with the relation of (TmT0)∝E2⁄3. The peak dielectric constant εp is also found to be suppressed with the dc bias field with the relation of εpE−2⁄3. The results clearly support that the phase transition of these compounds is of the second order.

Photoluminescence of V-type centers has been studied for KI and RbI crystals containing excess of iodine. Colored crystals were irradiated previously with V3 light at LNT to convert primary V centers into other V-type centers which induced absorption bands in the uv and the visible regions. It was found that when the samples are excited in one of absorption bands at LNT for KI and at 68 K for RbI, they exhibit two emission bands at 1540 and 1690 nm in KI; 1500 and 1630 nm in RbI, respectively. The excitation spectra consist of three bands at 350, 440 and 800 nm in KI; at 350, 445 and 800 nm in RbI, respectively. Separations of the two emission bands increase with increasing of temperature. In both iodides the luminescence is ascribed to transitions in the same type of trapped hole centers containing iodine atoms.

Emission excitation spectra have been measured in rhodamine 6G and tetracene in solutions at various temperatures in the low-energy side of the lowest absorption band. It has been found that the spectrum of rhodamine 6G is well approximated by a Gaussian convoluted by an exponential tail, while that of tetracene has shoulders in the nearly exponential tail. The temperature dependence of the low-energy tail of rhodamine 6G has been compared with that of the Urbach tail in solids. A long exponential-like tail has also been found in the emission spectrum of rhodamine 6G over ∼5000 cm−1 toward the low-energy side. From the analysis of the absorption, excitation and emission spectra, it is shown that both the molecular vibrational modes and the classical mode of the surroundings which has only quadratic interaction with the dye molecule contribute to these tails.

A broad luminescence band appears just below the zero-phonon luminescence band of the exciton. It is found from an analysis of the reabsorption effect on the luminescence spectrum that the secondary distribution model of the polaritons is not applicable to this band. The spectral shape changes with varying the temperature between 1.8 and 4.2 K. The broad band is assigned to the sideband associated with emission of an acoustical phonon. The luminescence spectrum of the acoustical phonon sideband is calculated with taking account of the polariton effect. The calculated spectrum coincides with the experimental curve. The energy width of the spatial dispersion of the exciton is estimated to be 5±1 cm−1 for wave vector K perpendicular to the (001)-plane. The zero-phonon luminescence band is found to be influenced considerably by the reabsorption effect.

Extended X-ray absorption fine structure measurements have been carried out near the K-edge of Nb3Sn in order to investigate the local structure of the martensitic and the premartensitic phases. The splitting of the first shell corresponding to the first neighbour Nb–Nb atoms into three shells has been observed in the premartensitic phase. This implies that the local distortion with the low temperature martensitic structure takes place in the cubic phase.
