Acute pulmonary edema due to mitral regurgitation can be a life-threatening condition that requires urgent intervention in dogs. A 9-year-old chihuahua with severe mitral regurgitation presented at the hospital with pulmonary edema on the day of surgery. Mitral valve plasty (MVP) under cardiopulmonary bypass with ultrafiltration to control edema was performed as scheduled. Pulmonary edema disappeared immediately after the surgery. This result suggests that MVP with ultrafiltration may be effective in dogs with severe acute pulmonary edema.
