The equation of state and the thermodynamic functions are rigorously obtained.

It is shown that a non-relativistic theory for laminar shocks breaks down for a plasma having a rather high Alfvén speed, vA\gtrsimc(memi)1⁄2. By using a 2–1/2 dimension, fully relativistic, fully electromagnetic particle code, time evolution of quasi-perpendicular shocks in such plasmas is studied. Some ions and electrons are accelerated simultaneously to highly relativistic speeds by the shock.

The phase transition of K2Ba(NO2)4 at Tc=−74°C has been investigated by X-ray diffraction. In the low-temperature phase (T<−74°C), superlattice reflections are observed at body center positions (h+1⁄2, k+1⁄2, l+1⁄2). In this phase, we find antiferroelectric order of NO2-groups. Diffuse scattering above Tc is found to be anisotropic. It is suggested that the transition has two-dimensional nature.

It is pointed out that, for the anomalous thermal boundary conductances between metal particles and liquid 3He observed at mK temperatures, randomly distributed spins near the surface and the soft mode of metal particles play a comparable role. This is concluded from the analysis of the recent measurements of boundary conductances by Osheroff and Richardson, where a novel magnetic field dependence has been found for the boundary between silver particles and liquid 3He in the mK region.

The temperature dependences of NMR spin-echo spectrum and magnetic susceptibility have been measured in the quasicrystalline phase of Al80Mn20. Compared with the equilibrium crystalline (hexagonal) phase, the susceptibility shows a marked temperature dependence below about 100 K. The widely distributed and temperature dependent NMR spin-echo spectrum has been observed only for the Al sites with a characteristic line shape at low temperatures that we tentatively attributed to a spin-density-wave like random distribution of the local fields at the Al sites. The lack of NMR signal associated with the Mn sites and the temperature dependence of the susceptibility suggest the formation of local magnetic moments on the Mn sites in the quasicrystalline phase.

From the analysis based on the dynamical correlated-effective-field approximation, it is found that the trend of the divergence of T1−1 in the paramagnetic phase around TN is closely related to the remarkable softening of the magnetic excitation for the K-point mode (q=q0) via the in-plane component of the static susceptibility χ(q0).

The calculation of the cross section for the 2LO phonon scattering is carried out and it is indicated that the interband LO phonon scattering of exciton between p and s exciton states is the important relaxation process in InBr.

The quantum nonlinear Schrödinger model under external force is studied. Through the quantum inverse scattering method, the transition amplitude between 1-soliton state and 2-soliton state is exactly calculated. The frequency dependence of the transition amplitude has an interesting property that the amplitude diverges at certain frequencies. This implies that a quantum soliton breaks up into solitons resonantly with external force. This phenomenon is called the resonant breakup of quantum soliton.

A general theory of fluctuations of the hypercycles is presented. Since the elementary process is inherently non-deterministic, the hypercycle is also subject to fluctuations. On the basis of the simplified model of Schuster and Sigmond, a set of coupled nonlinear Langevin equations is obtained. The analytical solution is given for the simplest case of the length n=2. The stationary distribution function is completely different from what is expected from the deterministric analysis, and it shows that the shortest hypercycle is “dead” at all.

The half-life and the multipolarity for the 213 keV transition in 93Sr have been determined to be (4.6±0.3) ns and E2 (≤15%Ml) from β-γ delayed and x-γ coincidences, respectively. The half-life for the 204 keV transition in 95Sr was also determined to be (20.9±0.5) ns. The reduced transition probabilities are deduced as B(E2)=(261−43+17)e2fm4 for the 213 keV transition and B(E2)=(71±2)e2fm4 for the 204 keV transition. These B(E2) values are comparable to the Weisskopf estimates and to those for the similar transitions in the neighbouring nuclei.

The influence of electron beam energy spread on FEL gain is investigated quantitatively. The dispersion relation is derived according to Johnston’s formulation. As the results of the analysis, it is found that the growth rate of the high frequency FEL instability is greater (less) than that of the low frequency instability when the beam energy spread Δγ<(>)Δγc. Here, Δγc is the critical beam energy spread which depends upon the beam current and energy, the wiggler wavelength and so on.

The effect of the time-periodic temperature oscillation upon the stability of a horizontal fluid layer in the presence of a stable salinity gradient is studied theoretically using the Galerkin method. The results of numerical calculation show that the critical Rayleigh number Rac becomes minimum at a certain positive value of the saline Rayleigh number Rs. The destabilizing effect of the salinity stratification is found to be due to the coupling of the oscillating basic temperature field with the salinity disturbance.

Localized electron plasma oscillations excited at the resonant surface by low-power microwaves incident obliquely on an inhomogeneous unmagnetized plasma in a cylindrical waveguide are measured by a receiving antenna. The disturbance by the antenna on the electrostatic fields is significantly reduced in our condition with a steep density gradient and large angles of incidence. As a result, patterns of large and broad resonance field including phase information are observed. The peak values of the resonantly excited field are compared with numerical analyses.

The drift orbit in the axisymmetrized tandem mirror Gamma 10 is calculated without recourse to the paraxial approximation, but with the use of the accurate magnetic field. The electrostatic potential is ignored. Two types of characteristic orbits are found, one is the higher order resonant orbit and the other the stochastic broadening orbit. Higher order resonant orbits occur in those particles which are trapped in a far-axis region of the combined central and anchor cell region, whereas stochastic broadening orbits are found for the particles trapped in the anchor cell region alone. The resonance conditions for higher order resonances are given by Δθ\simeqπ⁄6 and π⁄4 where Δθ is the drift azimuthal angle. These resonant orbits occur in the low energy regime, and thus they are expected to give a significant influence on the transport process in the far-axis region of Gamma 10.

The structure belongs to the hexagonal space group P\bar62m, where a partial disorder of CdBr3, chains occurs; the chains are rotated in antiphase in two of the three sublattice sites, while in the third site the chains are in disorder and can be represented by a superposition of the states in the former two sites. A close resemblance to the “partially disordered state” which was recently found in some triangular Ising antiferro-magnets is referred.

Polarized Raman spectra of NH4-TCNQ-I and -II have been observed in the temperature range including phase transition temperatures Tc=301 and 215 K, respectively. The intensity of low frequency modes decreases rapidly with approaching the phase transition temperature from below. Mode assignment has been made on low frequency modes in the low temperature phase of two crystals. A comparison among Raman spectra of NH4-TCNQ-I and alkali metal-TCNQ salts reveals that NH4-TCNQ-I resembles K-TCNQ in the stacking arrangement of the TCNQ molecules in the chains. The intensity variation is discussed in terms of the change of Raman selection rule and Raman polarizability by the dimerization of the TCNQ molecules.

Attenuation of megahertz ultrasound has been measured in an aluminum crystal under hydrostatic pressure at room temperature. From the pressure dependence of attenuation at various sound frequencies, the pressure dependence of damping constant for dislocation motion was determined by an analysis based on the overdamped resonance theory of dislocation. Specimen used was primarily zone-refined 99.9999% Al single crystal containing 1 ppm of Si as impurities. The specimen was irradiated by neutrons and 2–4 ppm of Si atoms were further introduced by a nuclear reaction. The specimen was also heat-treated in various ways. Thus the amount and state of impurity atoms were altered, and the high pressure experiments were made for the specimen in different states. The pressure dependence of damping constant was found to be very sensitive to the state of impurities. The order of magnitude and even the sign of the dependence were different for different impurity states. A qualitative discussion was given to interpret the experimental results.

The 77Se nuclear spin echo decay rate (1/T2) in the organic conductor (TMTSF)2ClO2 was found to exhibit a large peak around 30∼32 K, slightly above the structural phase transition temperature Tt=24 K. The peak was more pronounced with increasing field. This result indicates that the slow motion of TMTSF molecules with large amplitude, most probably associated with change in the molecular orientation, develops above Tt, which gives rise to spin echo decay via. the fluctuations of the anisotropic Knight shift. From the analysis of the spin echo decay, it is found that the amplitude of this motion reaches maximum at 30∼32 K and its correlation time is estimated to be 103∼10−5 sec depending on temperature. A change was found also in the 77Se NMR spectrum in this temperature region which may be interpreted as the motional narrowing effect.

The ionic soft-core system, as a model of α-AgI, of which pair potential consists of only Coulombic and soft-core repulsive terms is characterized by two parameters σAg⁄σI, the ratio of the ionic core radii, and Γ, the ratio between the strengths of the both terms. The system is extensively studied with use of the molecular dynamics method to clarify characteristic features of interionic potentials which play an important role for the existence of the ion-conducting α-phase. Dependences of the system on Γ and σAg⁄σI are investigated. Our results suggest that the Pauling’s concept of the additivity rule of ionic radii is necessary for stabilization of anion sublattice and that the Coulomb force must be appropriately weak for diffusive motion of cations to take place.

It was found that Brownian-like motion of a φ4 kink is induced by two mechanisms. One is a random walk whose basic steps are shifts of the kink due to collisions with thermally excited phonons. It was studied by Wada and Schrieffer. The other is an ordinary Brownian motion, where friction is caused by momentum transfers in the collision. It was studied by the present authors. The relation between the two is clarified with the help of fluctuation-dissipation theorem for the kink motion. In the static limit, the second mechanism is dominant and the Einstein relation D=kBT∝(kBT)−1 holds, where M is mass of the kink. When the frequency is not zero and the temperature is low enough, the first mechanism becomes dominant and the diffusion constant is proportional to (kBT)2. It is four times as large as the previous result.

The theoretical momentum density distributions (MDD) in NbO measured by Compton profile experiments and positron annihilation techniques are calculated by the APW method. The difference between Compton profile and the positron annihilation profile comes from the trapping of positrons at vacancies. The trapping effect makes the positron annihilation profiles broader a little. In order to express the ground state of a positron in NbO by the APW method, 33 augmented plane waves with at least three angular momentum quantum number terms (l=0, 2 and 4) are found to be necessary. Both the Compton profiles and positron annihilation profiles show anisotropies, but those structures are different from each other. It is shown that the anisotropies are due to the fully occupied bands as well as to the topology of the Fermi surfaces. But folded MDD’s to the first Brillouin zone show the characteristic structures of the Fermi surfaces very well.

Effective masses in GaAs, InSb and InP are determined in the temperature range from 77 to 300 K from the magnetophonon resonance experiments. An expression for the conduction band effective mass valid for zinc blende crystals is derived by the k.p perturbation theory and by taking into account the higher lying bands, where two momentum matrix elements P0 and P1 appear. The momentum matrix elements are estimated from the parameters determined from the energy band calculations. Temperature dependence of the effective mass is calculated using the expression derived in this paper and dilational change of the energy gaps which are estimated from the pseudopotential method and the experimental data of the linear thermal expansion coefficient. Reasonable agreement is obtained for GaAs but agreement is not so good in InSb and InP.

The electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance and magnetic susceptibility of single crystalline CexLa1−xCu6 (x=0–1) have been measured down to mK region. As the Ce concentration is increased, the consecutive change from the dilute (incoherent) Kondo regime to the Kondo lattice (coherent) regime is observed. The characteristic features in the coherent Kondo regime are clearly observed in the resistivity and the magnetoresistance above x=0.7. The low temperature resistivity in CexLa1−xCu6 shows a T2 dependence and the residual resistivity follows the Nordheim law. As for the coherence effect in CeCu6, the resistivity follows a T2 dependence below 0.1 K, the magnetoresistance changes from negative to positive below about 0.15 K within applied magnetic fields and the susceptibility shows an enhanced Pauli paramagnetism below 1 K.

Poly(p-phenylene) films with a conductivity of ca. 100 S/cm are synthesized by a new method of electrical oxidation of benzene using the composite electrolytes of CuCl2/LiAsF6. An in situ study of the absorption spectra of the poly(p-phenylene) films during the electrochemical doping with AsF6 has been carried out. From the absorption spectrum of undoped state, we find a strong absorption peak at ca. 3.4 eV which is associated with the transition from ground-state to excited-state. The remarkable changes of the absorption spectra below the photon energy of 3.0 eV are observed, which are related to the polaron and/or bipolaron states of this polymer. The electrochemical n-type doping is also demonstrated.

By the use of the path-integral method, general formula of the free energy and the conductivity of electrons in a two-dimensional Wigner crystal are obtained when both of the electron-electron and the electron-surface interactions are present. The dc conductivity is calculated explicitly for electrons bound on the surface of liquid He in the case of the weak electron-ripplon coupling. Good agreement is obtained between theory and experiment about the density dependence of the collision time.

Temperature dependence of the diagonal resistivity ρxx at the minimum of the 1/3 and 2/3 fractional quantum Hall effect has been measured for GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures having wide variety of mobility. The results are well expressed by assuming two activated conduction processes. The activation energies in high temperature region do not show a systematic dependence on the magnetic field B but on the μB, where μ is the electron mobility at zero field. The activation energy for the 2/3 effect is about one third of that for the 1/3 effect when scaled by μB. This result shows that there is no electron-hole symmetry in the experimental activation energy.

The heat capacity, resistivity and superconductivity of layered compound 2H-NbS2 intercalated with organic molecules have been studied. Heat capacity data show that upon intercalation the superconducting transition temperature decreases from 6.1 K to 2.1–4.1 K and both the Debye temperature and coefficient of electronic specific heat decrease. The temperature dependence of the resistivity measured along the layer plane is also influenced by intercalation. Experimental results are discussed in terms of nearly two-dimensional characters of conduction electrons and phonons. The electron-phonon coupling constant and the electronic density-of-states at the Fermi energy N(0) are estimated. It is shown that N(0) for intercalation compounds is able to be interpreted by the two-dimensional electronic nature.

Lavas phase compounds (YxZr1−x)Fe2 have C15 structure, and are ferromagnetic. They absorb hydrogen under the condition of 1 atm, room temperature, to form hydrides (YxZr1−x)Fe2Hy. Hydrogen content y increases from O(ZrFe2) to 4.2(YFe2) with x continuously. The dependence of μFe and Tc of hydrides on x is different for hydrogen content, namely y>3 or y<3. In y\gtrsim3, the hydrogen is assumed to form spinel structure with parent compound and the hydrogen is in H like state. In y\lesssim3, it is assumed that the hydrogen forms solid solution in H+ like state.

The effect of crystal field on Kondo resistivity in metals with Ce impurities is theoretically studied. The T-matrix of conduction electron is calculated in the self-consistent ladder approximation by applying Abrikosov’s pseudofermion technique to the Coqblin-Schrieffer exchange model. The numerical results of the resistivity in cubic and tetragonal crystals are compared with the experimental ones in CexLa1−xAl2 and CeCu2Si2. Our theory provides a unified view of the magnetic and transport properties in Ce compounds and alloys.

Neutron diffraction study was carried out on a single crystal of Ba2Mg2Fe12O22. The magnetic structure of Ba2Mg2Fe12O22 changes at 195 K, collinear ferrimagnet above 195 K and proper helix below 195 K. The helix is propagated along the c-axis by rotations of the large and small spin-bunches. The turn angle of the helix is 59.6° at 77 K and rapidly decreases as the temperature approaches 195 K. Results are discussed from a point of view of the exchange interactions.

We report a Monte Carlo study on the critical relaxation of the three-dimensional kinetic Ising model from a nonequilibrium initial state. It is shown that the details of the method, namely, a choice of the sampling procedure and a functional form of the transition probability do not affect an asymptotic power-law relaxation. The finite-size effects on the critical relaxation is also studied. Cross-over from the power-law relaxation to the exponential one is found, which is discussed in view of the dynamical finite-size scaling theory.

The static properties of spin density waves (SDW) in (TMTSF)2PF6 were determined by a precise analysis of 1H-NMR lineshape in the low temperature SDW state. The observed angular dependence of lineshape was well reproduced by a picture of incommensurate sinusoidal SDW’s. The wave number was found to be (0.5, 0.24±0.03, −0.06±0.20) in the units of a*, b* and c*. This value is very near the optimal nesting vector recently calculated. The SDW amplitude at low temperature was estimated as 8% μB/molecule.

The temperature variation of the lattice constants below room temperature has been measured on an X-ray four-circle diffractometer for antiferroelectric CsH3(SeO3)2 and CsD3(SeO3)2. The results confirm that the −65°C transition in CsD3(SeO3)2 corresponds to the −128°C antiferroelectric transition in CsH3(SeO3)2. It is shown that the monoclinic modification of CsD3(SeO3)2 exists in as-grown crystals at room temperature in addition to the triclinic modification and that the monoclinic modification transforms to a triclinic one on cooling.

Optical spectrum of R′-band at 13705 cm−1 in YbCrO3 is observed in high magnetic field up to 511 kOe. When the field is parallel to the c-axis, usual linear Zeeman splitting is found in the low field region. However, the splitting above 300 kOe decreases with increasing the field and an amalgamated absorption band is observed above 400 kOe. Origin of the anomalous Zeeman effect is explained by the spin reorientation. The reorientation field observed in this crystal is much higher than those of the other orthochromites.

A theory is presented for the resonant photoemission of insulators. Interference effect between the direct valence electron excitation and the core-electron excitation followed by the super Coster-Kronig transition is examined. Our previous theory is extended to include the hybridization of the valence state to the conduction band. It is shown that the satellite intensity persists far below the core-level photothreshold and exhibits a Fano type antiresonance, in agreement with the recent experiment of copper halides by Ishii et al.

In nonlinear capacitors, inductors and resistors, general equations holding among the voltages and currents at different frequencies are derived. These are obtained only on the assumption that the characteristics for the nonlinear elements are single-valued. The well-known Manley-Rowe relation is the lowest order and simplest ones among these equations. But, even then, the relations are more extensive, in the sense that the number of the voltage generators may be arbitrary.
