This research of 'The Movement of Visual Communication Design in Taiwan after WWII' is chronologically divided into two parts. Part I contains the period from 1945 to 1970 while Part II begins from 1970 till now. By analyzing the major design movements in Taiwan after World War II and doing relevant literary reviews and interviews with the people concerned, we may clarify the history of Visual Communication Design in Taiwan. Those major design movements include 'East, Kao-hwa, Taiwan Ad Companies', 'Chinese Artistic Design Associate', 'Black & White Exhibition', 'Design Elite Training Program', 'Design Man & Designer Magazine' etc., As a result, we have found that except the event of 'Design Elite Training Program' involving with industrial design, others are mainly focus on Visual Communication Design itself. Besides, the research reveals that the development of the design and its education in the early period of Taiwan's Post-bellum History were under the influence of Japan and helped by Japanese or American proficient.

In three directions of Comlexity research found by methodological study of Comlexity in the first half of this paper, it was noticed that market share closely connected with Product design had a character of Fractal. From the viewpoint, authors have led the hypothesis "Market share has power distribution indicating the character of Fractal under complete free market. However, power distribution will be crumbled in the case that market share have obstructive factors inside the market". Power distribution index showing Fractal level of Market share have been proposed by use of Method of least squares calculated by distributive dots of market share and Regression equation and how to reckon Coefficient of determination in Multiple regression analysis. Obstructive factors of free market suggested by the power distribution index have been considered through the case of 26 product market shares. It is found that it is possible to analysis product development from a new point of view.

This paper examines the role of the Japan Society, London (organized in 1892) in articles about Japan published in The Studio (established in 1893), an art magazine as a means of distributing design information, in the 1890's. There were nine writers who wrote eighteen articles about Japan in The Studio in the 1890's except for anonymous articles. Eight writers of these belonged to the Japan Society, and played an active role in research and working. From the beginning, C.Holme, the editor of The Studio, especially was one of the leading figures in the Japan Society. There were common contents and illustrations between lectures in the regular meetings of the Japan Society and articles about Japan in The Studio. These facts suggest that the theme and writer of article about Japan were fixed due to the connection with the Japan Society. That is, the Japan Society was the main think tank for articles on Japan in The Studio in the 1890's.

In some aspects of contemporary theory of form, attempts are made to unveil the quality which is supposed to be lost from modern manufacture and design. Examples of this insight can be found in the theoretical writings of David Pye and Christopher Alexander. Their writings are critical of Modern Design in its qualitative essence and try to articulate and denominate what can be approximately termed as the crafted quality. They sought to demonstrate the grave importance of this quality's presence to our very nature and being. In doing this, David Pye had tried to rearticulate the hitherto indistinct thinking in modern crafts with his theory of workmanship and diversity. Christopher Alexander has moved to more drastically innovative grounds and created a whole ontology of qualitative categories which work as a core to his environmental and generative experiments.

This article discusses why the British design reform movement in the 1920s was inactive, and how some problems were overcome in the 1930s, through the activities of the DIA. In the 1920s in Britain, the modern concept of design was not clearly established. One reason was that the DIA, which pioneered in adopting the term to its name, took wrong methods to publicize its concept and confused the public. Since their failure at the Leipzig Exhibition (1927), the DIA endeavored to cast off the public's biased view on Modernism, and to improve the designers' status. It also grew more open to new ideas and influences. The outcome was Anthony Bertram's Design (1937), which explained modern design as an answer to the public's real needs.

Since the introduction of CAD in the field of automobile designing some twenty years ago, the role of designers and the supporting role of design-sculptors have been greatly changed. This report first describes the history of design-Sculptors for automobiles and the changes in automobile designing processes by the introduction of CAD processing. The issues design-sculptors are facing in the CAD processing were then described, namely, workload per unit time, appropriate precision levels of CAD, cost, management processes, and the quality of design-sculptors for CAD. The measures to cope with these issues were also discussed, Lastly the future of design-sculptors to make the best use of CAD processing for automobiles was proposed.

Culture and current status of contemporary designing in Korea are described as observed by a Japanese industrial designer staying there for three years. Differences noted between the two countries in culture as well as in the field of designing appeared to be derived from the differences in climates, history, national traits, and economic status. Based on the recognition of these differences, tasks and future directions for designers in both countries are discussed. The necessity to establish collaborative relationship between Korea and Japan with mutual understanding of cultural differences while recognizing the position as countries in Asia in the future globalization in the 2lst Century was described, focusing on designing.

This paper analyses the formation and development of woodcraft industry in the end of Qing era in the Da-Shi region of Taiwan. From interviews with woodworkers and analysing original data, the results can be made as follows : 1) Some conditions determine the industrial background in Da-Shi in the end of Qing era, such as : a social request for utilization of the Da-Han river, a supply for driftwood, and the foundation of the local-temples and subsequent need for religious paraphernalia, in addition, articles that are needed in the a mausoleum/mansion. 2) Considerations of some previously related research and it's inherent drawbacks Historically, the foundation of the wood craft industry in present Da-Shi was the unification of seven woodworkers and art technicians of which Chen Cao Zhi, an influential woodworker, who came from mainlaind China, is the geneological founder. They were united to organize a corporation and recruit either local or non local technicians as their new workers in response to the social needs. 3) Following the decreasing of transportation by water in the Da-Han River, the former shipwrights further changed their work to make woodcrafts.
