  • − Proposing “Story Immersion” as a Media Mix

    We proposed “story immersion” as a method of forming a sense of immersion to a place by linking the actual place with narrative information.The experiment was conducted to fostere people' sense of immersion to an old Japanese-style house with the design involving the real space and transmitting narrative information through SNS. The results concluded that sense of immersion was fostered since its high score. “immersion in the story by empathizing with the characters,” “formation of the image of a continuous relationship between the place and the self,” and “thoughts of revisiting because of immersion in the story” occurred. it was found that participants being encouraged to empathize with the feelings and behaviors of the characters gave them a sense of familiarity in the real space, which elicited an attachment to the old Japanese-style house.

    Regardless of the department or specialty, university education is oriented towards active learning to resolve regional issues or create innovations. Its implementation and hence Project-Based Learning or Problem-Based Learning (PBL) plays a major role to enhance students learning practically. Various methods and approaches, such as Design Thinking, have been implementing in PBL to ensure smooth implementation and to increase educational effectiveness. However, there are not enough discussions to define the methods or approaches for design students. In this context, this paper addresses this challenge by presenting a new student-led approach called Design-Based Learning. This approach allows students to practice design solutions to resolve regional issues. Then, we introduced the Design-Based Learning approach to the existing PBL and concluded the learning effects for design students, not only the learning effects expected with Design Thinking but also suggesting an affinity with them.

    In this study, as an example of the temporary space sign system for Covid-19 vaccination in Sumida ward, Tokyo, the user evaluation of the sign system designed for the place was carried out. Unlike ordinary spaces, temporary space sign systems form areas on a limited schedule, so it is necessary to properly configure space and process information in the sign design and convey it to users. Therefore, paper files, panels, and floor induction lines are provided and configured as sign systems for vaccination spaces users. The user evaluation results show that paper files (information sign system) that convey comprehensive information about space and processing are useful for vaccination for specific users such as those in their 60s and older. The result is expected to serve as the reference to the installation method and manufacture of the sign system in temporary spaces.

  • ─ Comparative Analysis of U.S and Chinese Sitcoms with Japanese Subjects

    The purpose of this study is to clarify the differences between Japanese subjects' perceptions of the fun of American and Chinese sitcoms. A questionnaire was used to conduct the survey, and data analysis was conducted to determine where the differences occurred, and content analysis was conducted to determine why such differences occurred. The reason and background of the differences were explored from the content of the texts and their impressions.
    As a result, Japanese subjects perceived more interestingness in the U.S. sitcoms compared to the Chinese sitcoms, and the insertion points of rough tracks that could be perceived as interesting were also higher in the U.S. works. In addition, the subjects had the impressions and impressions of good tempo, vulgarity, and many conversations among friends for the U.S. sitcoms, and the impressions and impressions of difficult to understand, interesting movements, and many conversations among family members for the Chinese sitcoms.

    Beehives used for keeping European honey bees are mostly limited to Langstroth beehives in Japan, and few new hives have been proposed. In order to clarify the design requirements for the honeybee hive, the causal relationship was examined using graph theory. As a result of discussions by five beekeepers on the design requirements for honey beehives, a total of 45 items were set. As a result of analysis by the ISM method, it was found that 45 design requirements consisted of 17 layers, and they had a complicated causal relationship. In addition, among these, design requirements that should be especially emphasized are that the nest board that can be easily attached and detached can be stored in the beehives, that the internal space of the beehives can be expanded or contracted according to the number of bees, and that it is robust. It was also suggested that the design requirements may differ depending on the purpose and conditions of beekeeping.

    The purpose of this study is to propose a design workshop model effective for tourism-based community development through a case study in the Miura Peninsula. Therefore, based on the general design process, we created a hypothetical design workshop model for tourism-based community development and held workshops. In the general design process, the first step is often setting targets. However, in the case of tourism-based community development, the process of defining regional problems and organizing resources greatly influences the setting of targets. In the application of design workshops to tourism-based community development, it was clarified that by repeating the processes of setting targets, defining regional problems and organizing resources, and creating tourism concepts, one can follow the characteristic process of considering the optimal relationship between the three aspects. Based on this feature, we partially revised the hypothetical model and presented a design workshop model that is likely to be effective for tourism-based community development.

    The objective of this study is to clarify factors of regional identity that are latent in people's consciousness in architecture facade captured by the citizens. Therefore, in addition to grasping the main factors by factor analysis using the attitude survey by the SD method, the relationship between regional characteristics and the main factors was clarified by multiple regression analysis. Furthermore, the facade was categorized by cluster analysis.
    From attitude survey, the site area is 8,100 m2 or more and less than -14,400, the building area is 3,600 m2 or more, the total floor area is 32,400 m2 or more, and the high-rise building on the 6th floor or more is 60 m or more are evaluated as [Nagoya]. From factor analysis, it was identified two factors related to [Nagoya]. From cluster analysis, three types were extracted. Among them, type 1 including [Nagoya] was characterized by "beautiful, urban, and lovely." Based on these results and attitude survey, it was found that the adjectives that are the factor of [Nagoya] are "beautiful, urban, innovative, sharp, flashy, deluxe, and lovely."

    This study considers visioning as an application of imagination as discussed in studies on creative cognition, and explains when visioning is effective for identifying idea creativity. Based on the assumption that the visioning cognitive process consists of vision and product imagination, the study findings were derived from a survey of ideas generated by 225 undergraduate students studying business.
    Idea creativity can be realized through a product being imagined with a vision that is semantically far from the target development area. Besides, the relationship is led by 1: a vision that is far from the target development area as a hint, and by 2: the vision being imagined more specifically.
    The study findings suggest that imagining a vision with a hint that is far from the target development area, or imagining it specifically facilitates the identification of idea creativity by visioning.

    In this study, to tackle excessive salt and sugar intake, we attempted to minimize salt and sugar intake by changing the plate on which food is served. We investigated the association of various factors of plates, such as the texture (metal and ceramics with fillers) and color, with taste evaluations of saltiness and sweetness. We performed an impression experiment on the appearance and texture of 15 kinds of plates made from various materials, and then 8 kinds were subsequently selected for a comparative taste evaluation. The results showed that the material of a plate affects the associated impression and taste of food, leading to differences in the taste evaluation of saltiness and sweetness. Moreover, it was found that ceramic plates mixed with bamboo fiber, chamotte, or plant-fiber paper enhanced the taste of saltiness. Metallic plates were also verified to have the same effect. On the other hand, the sweetness evaluation experiment showed that ceramic plates mixed with diatomite fillers enhanced the taste of sweetness. Thus, our results showed that the material of plates influences the taste evaluation of saltiness and sweetness, and therefore, salt and sugar intake may be suppressed by selecting an appropriate plate.

    The purpose of this paper is to reconsider historical significance of the 1st International Biennale “ARTEC 89” at the World Design Exposition' 89. The ARTEC was held from 1989 till 1997, which formed the basis of Media Art and reflected the transitional period in the information society. The ARTEC fostered ‘Media Art’, further it made a great contribution to identification of Design City Nagoya. In this paper, firstly we discuss the relevance between the areal matters of Nagoya and the World Design Exposition and ICSID. Secondly, we focus a director Shigeki Mori and Professor Katsuhiro Yamaguchi and clarify their role in the process to the ARTEC. Thirdly we consider the connection between High Technology Art and the policies of Nagoya City and the Ministry of International Trade and Industry. The result provides us the conclusion that ARTEC was relevant to the congested issues of national and local business, of urban image making and cultural creativity, and of internationalization in contemporary art.
