This research was conducted on the pedestrian space in tourism-based urban planning in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, as to how it was used and evaluated by users and what was in demand. The result shows that introducing the concept of urban tourism and space direction methods to existing pedestrian space gave a new impression of city to the users. However, more than a few issues were pointed out on behavior support, charm-making, permanence/sustainablity/harmony, diversity, management and interchange, etc. According to those, the necessity for enriching the software which cooperates with touristic activities, and the importance of planning or design which are based on the grasp of real users' behaviors and consciousness are suggested.

Meshes are constructed of using two types of curves; one that expresses of the shape of cross-section, and another that clarifies the placement relationship between curves of the first type. These curves are constructed from line segments of equal length. These shapes depend on the distributions of angles between adjacent segments. This paper proposes a method for analyzing quantitatively characteristic of shape and for generating mesh of square-built shape. The Walsh transform pair is applied to angle distributions of one type of these curves, and the Fourier transform pair is applied to angle distributions of another type of curves. As a result, the mesh constructed of the deformed curves is generated. In these curves, smooth-built shape in one type of curves and square-built shape in another type of curves are emphasized.

This is a pilot study of packaging design in Japanese Sake and aimed at analysis of present label design. Interview with design company of Sake's label revealed three issues; 1) discrepancy between designers and clients about the image, 2) no strategy based on the Sake's class, and 3) conservatism of Sake makers. Design analysis was done using current 689 Sake's labels, 245 20-year-old labels, 207 Shochu's labels, and 113 Awamori's labels. Although there was no distinct design strategy to distinguish the classes, the tendency was seen. A Quantification III revealed two dimensions of the current Sake's labels; "simple vs complex" and "harmony vs disparate". Considering the characters of the past Sake's labels, we have found two design trends to simple and to harmony.

The purpose of study is to clarify the difference of impressions between stripe patterns and worn stripe skirts and which elements act on impressions. From 185 striped clothes from fashion magazines, 16 representative patterns were picked up. Printed stripe patterns and photographs of worn skirts were evaluated by young participants. Formality, originality, and lightness were extracted. Although there was little difference of impressions between patterns and worn skirts in formality, originality and lightness revealed some difference. Formality was determined interactively by many design elements. Narrow stripe seemed novel, but wide stripe and colorful stripe were seen as original in skirts. Though many elements of stripe affected lightness of the patterns, only color was crucial to lightness impression of worn skirt.

The study aims to investigate the role of design in digital media environment by analyzing through two keywords "Information" and "Knowledge". There is a vast circulation of digital media; there are equal difficulties in the management and assessment of this media in terms of aesthetics as well as quality. Design does not stop at letters and language, application of digital media design has eventually expanded, featuring the experiences of the five senses, including, space, time, sounds and imagery. As digitized information is easily copied, modified, publicly delivered and accessed, the exclusive value of information has been declining. Therefore, the importance of "Knowledge" in "Knowledge society" should be recognized. In this study, constantly advancing state of digital design is taken in to consideration, knowledge within a knowledge society is defined as not the value that something holds in itself but rather, the things that make creating new value possible. Information consumers or so-called users have virtually unlimited choice when it comes to choosing digital media. The role the designer will play in the field of digital media is to create the appropriate value for the media to be selected.

This paper is divided into six sections: Fact-Idea-Problem-Solution-Application-Effect. There is a Fact that most Lebanese mix two or three languages in their daily life: Arabic, French and English. This fact became a characteristic of the Lebanese culture. To this verbal cultural situation, I created a visual, the Idea, the purpose of my study. It shows the spoken mixture of languages visually: writing Arabic with Arabic letters and writing English and French with Latin letters. The Arabic letters are written from right to left while Latin script is written from left to right, thus, when combined, there are problems of readability. One problem is the direction of reading: when combined, should the reader start with Arabic or with Latin script? The second problem is the omission of a script: some readers judge it enough to read one language and drop the other. The Solution is the connection of letters: it forces the reader to read both scripts and imposes a direction of reading. The fifth part is the Application of these connections in a useful context. The Effect is the last part, the conclusion. It shows some effects and the potential these connections have on communication.

'Footscape design' has not been established as a general concept yet. This article attempts to formulate a fundamental framework of regionally characterized and environment-friendly footscape design, exploring the meaning, roles and methods of footscape design. The article presents as; (1) the importance of footscape design considering human feelings, (2) the roles of footscape design to form regional landscape, (3) the requirements to be fit with the types of pedestrian area, (4) the design approaches to be fit with the usage of pedestrian area, (5) the technical and functional problems of footscape design for the future pavement of pedestrian area, (6) the design methods to form footscape with basic elements. As a whole, the framework for footscape design of environment-friendly pavement, which is good for pedestrians, having regional characteristics, has been derived.

In this paper, the authors discuss significance of Banujil needlework for Korean women with the light of the first technical book Choson Jaebong Jeonseo published in 1925, and interviews with MS. Yang Kap-Jo who are keeping Banujil needlework as her lifework under the influence of the book. Once Banujil needlework was considered one of the most important virtues of women, they used to make all clothes of their family by own hands. They always choose appropriate materials and shape/design according to changes of season. In addition, they did not waste any material, even a scrap of cloth. Under prevailing ethics of Confucianism throughout their life, women expressed their identity through Banujil needlework. The culture of Banujil needlework is reflected in Choson Jaebong Jeonseo.
