On the ship control, the navigation officer as decision maker, observes the traffic situation with optimal view or uses the radar. Then, he orders the helmsman to keep a rudder angle or a course, who has to do it with using the informations of the course deviation and the rudder indicator.
In this paper the relation between the given information and the human performance in the course keeping is discussed.
The followings are research conclusions:
(1) Yaw rate meter is preferable to control the larger ship, (2) As the ship is larger, maximum compensating phase is larger with using the yaw rate meter, (3) The human operator cannot control the ship for long time when the noise is at high level, (4) Sea sight view is important for optimal control of the smaller ship.
