    The gametophytic chromosomes of 6 moss species are here reported. Their karyotype formulae are as follows:
    Acanthocladium japonicum Broth. et Par. K(n)=5=V(H)+2V+J+J(h)
    Acanthocladium nakanishikii Broth. K(n)=9=V(H)+4V+3J+J(h)
    Acroporium nipponense Sak. K(n)=8=V(H)+4V+2J+J(h)

    The detailed morphology of the pachytene chromosomes and microsporogenesis have been studied in the six Eu-Sorghums. The pachytene chromosomes are depicted on the basis of total length, relative length, arm ratio, amount and distribution of heterochromatin and number and position of chromomeres. The characteristics of each of the ten pachytene bivalents in the haploid complement are described in detail bringing out similarities and differences amongst them. Based on the idiograms of the pachytene chromosomes, the possible role of chromosomes in speciation and the relationship amongst these Eu-Sorghums are discussed. Two basic archetypes in the 20-chromosomed taxa have been suggested-one with five long chromosomes and the other with five short chromosomes. It is proposed that the present day cultivated forms of Eu-Sorghums are allopolyploids of crosses between two such forms.

    1. The number of abdominal bristles of D. melanogaster was selected in both high and low directions. The response of hybrid strains (Oregon-R×Samarkand) was generally higher than that of pure strains (Oregon-R), presumably because the former had higher genetic variability at the start of the experiment.
    2. Genetic variability, probably originating from mutation and recombination in polygenic systems, was induced by the irradiation, and contributed to the effectiveness of artificial selection. From the variance analysis, the grade of response of each lot was ranked as follows: both sexes treated=only males treated>only females treated> both sexes untreated. The possible difference in effectiveness between induced mutation and induced recombination is discussed.
    3. The mutation rates induced by X-rays, in terms of increments of variance, have been estimated from the selection responses. They are 28.1×10-5 (both sexes treated), 10.7×10-5 (only females treated) and 20.3×10-5 (only males treated) per unit dose, respectively.

    A slow growing male sterile mutant, 'Ribbon', was first observed in the M2 progenies of 70, 000 R treatment of the dry seeds of Corchorus capsularis L. Genetically, normal leaf trait was found to be dominant over 'Ribbon' trait and male fertility over sterility. The leaf variation is controlled by one factor pair and similar is the case with male sterility. The trend of fluctuation of pollen sterility in F2 population indicates the probability of the presence of two closely linked genes controlling the two traits.
