    On the bases of morphological features, two plants having 28 chromosomes were selected in a selfed progeny of 13"+2'; plant that was obtained from recurrent-backcrossing of the offspring of monosomic 5B common wheat (Chinese Spring)×durum wheat (Stewart) with Stewart. Those plants were crossed with Stewart durum and with ditelosomic 5D of Chinese Spring. Resulted F1 individuals showed exclusively a meiotic pairing of 13"+2' in the former cross and 1"hm+13"+7' in the latter, where one heteromorphic pair belongs to chromosome 5D. Therefore, those two plants could be identified as the disomic substitution of 5D for 5B of Stewart durum.
    The substitution line was little different from normal Stewart, showing thicker culm, lux ear and somewhat early ear emergency. It is highly fertile and can be easily maintained.

    6-Thioguanine(6TG)-resistant clones were obtained in Chinese hamster cells after treatment with ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) or N-methyl-N'-nitro-N nitrosoguanidine (MNNG). These 6TG-resistant clones were tested for their complementation ability using cell hybridization method with polyethylene glycol. Among twenty-seven EMS-induced 6TG-resistant clones, six were shown to be complementable with a standard CH 252 clones (group A) and classified as complementation group B. Among fifteen MNNG-induced 6TG-resistant clones, three were classified as group A and ten as group B. Further hybridization tests within the same complementation group showed that there were no subgroups in each complementation group. These results indicate that the chemicals used for the induction of forward mutations may have affected different cistrons in the hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase locus in cultured Chinese hamster cells.

    Male meiosis in 6 species of the sarcophagid genus Parasarcophaga-P. misera, P. albiceps, P. argyrostoma, P. orchidea, P. ruficornis and P. knabi-was investigated with a view to obtain information regarding the degree of homology betweeen the X and Y chromosomes. Both autosomal as well as the sex bivalents are achiasmate in all the six species. The X and Y chromosomes in all the species, except P. knabi, show a close side by side association right from prophase I to metaphase I. In P. knabi, the extremely long X and Y chromosomes are spatially separate on emergence from the resting nucleus at prophase I and do not show close association at metaphase I. The role of C-band positive heterochromatic material in the pairing of X and Y chromosomes during first meiotic prophase has been discussed.

    Jumping behaviour (pyokori) which was elicited by a momental decrease of light intensity in the bw; st ss strain was markedly influenced by intensity of illumination, light wavelength and age of fly. Besides, an intimate relationship was found between the facet number and the pyokori response. B; bw; st ss strain was synthesized by the cross between Bar-eyed mutant and the original bw; st ss strains. The synthesized B; bw; st ss strain showed almost no pyokori response and the facet number of the strain was 35.7 in females and 63.9 in males. The heterozygous female flies from reciprocal crosses between B; bw; st ss and bw; st ss strains, showed 20-40 percent pyokori response and their facet number was about 270. The facet number of B; bw; st ss flies was increased to nearly the same as that of the original bw; st ss flies, when the larvae were bred by the medium containing 1.8 percent of lactamide. Flies, having enlarged eyes artificially, showed the similar pyokori response as the original bw; st ss flies. The frequency of pyokori response of B; bw; st ss flies became higher in proportion to the increase of facet number.

    Alleles at the agouti locus determine the pattern formation of mouse hair pigments. Production of black hair pigment in the hair follicles of genotypically yellow mice was induced by irradiation with UV light at 254nm. The induced black pigment seems to be eumelanin that is normally found in the hair-bulb melanocytes of genotypically black mice judging by the electron-microscopic observation. The shift of production of melanin seems to occur within a single melanocyte.

    The mitochondrial DNAs of house mouse, Mus musculus in twenty-five different laboratory strains showed identical cleavage patterns on digestion with nine different restriction endonucleases. The cleavage patterns were identical to those of Canadian wild mice, M. m. domesticus but clearly different from the patterns of three Asian subspecies, M. m. bactrianus, M. m. castaneus and M. m. molossinus. Based on comparison of the cleavage maps of the four subspecies, the time of divergence between M. m. domesticus and three Asian subspecies was estimated to be 1-2.5×106 years. These results suggest that the genetic background of laboratory mice is mainly derived from M. m. domesticus.

    The occurrence of three fibroin phenotypes in the silkworm, Bombyx mori, has been demonstrated by comparing the electrophoretic mobility of fibroin large subunit on SDS-polyacrylamide gel (Hyodo, A. and Shimura, K. (1980) Japan. J. Genetics, 55: 203-209). In the present paper, linkage analysis of the fibroin gene was performed by observing the fibroin phenotype, using J-131 silkworm strain and twenty-four silkworm stocks carrying genetic markers on each chromosome. The fibroin gene was found to be linked with the Nd gene locating on the 23rd chromosome.

    A reproducible C banding technique for Vicia faba chromosomes was developed by the combination of the modified BSG method (Tanaka and Taniguchi 1975) and the enzyme maceration and flame drying method (Kurata and Omura 1978). In comparison with the previous reports on C banding of Vicia faba, this technique revealed clear bands in the centromeric regions of all chromosomes, besides the bands in the proximal regions of both arms and the nucleolar organizing region of M chromosome and in the interstitial regions of the long arms of S chromosomes.

    The effect of inbreeding on the egg to adult survival values was examined for D. simulans over a wide range of inbreeding levels (0<F<0.886). Viability was found to be a curvilinear function of the inbreeding coefficient, indicating synergistic interaction among loci.
