  • ─ Effects on Drivers' Willingness to Stop and Gazing Behavior and Road Marking

    This study examined the desirability of installing three-dimensional road surface letter markings at unsignalized crosswalk to remind drivers to pause. In the impression evaluation experiment using the driving simulator, we examined the effects of the location, number, and color of the road surface letter markings on the driver's willingness to stop. The results showed that the willingness to stop increased logarithmically with the number of road markings installed and the area of colored pavement, and that the effect of installation location was small. In the experiment on gazing behavior toward people waiting to cross the street, the effects of the presence or absence of three-dimensional road markings were examined. The results showed that pedestrian gazes were higher when there were no three-dimensional markings. In conclusion, it is effective to install one colored marker at the location away from the crosswalk.

    The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of style and aesthetic sense of Sakaida Kakiemon XV, as well as to determine how he responded to contemporary ceramics by blending tradition and innovation. Text mining was conducted on gallery talks held during Sakaida Kakiemon XV exhibitions over a three-year period from 2017 to 2019, in order to analyze how beliefs, principles, and concepts about the creation of artworks are realized and implemented in actual pieces of art.
    The results revealed that up until 2017, the artist's style involved 'drawing simple patterns on Nigoshide of various shapes,' but from 2018 onwards, 'modifications with an awareness of Kakiemon style colors' were added. By 2019, there was an implementation of 'composition of motifs with an awareness of Kakiemon style balance,' indicating clear progress. This was not simply a return to the classical designs of his forebears, but rather a fusion of tradition and innovation. Kakiemon XV realized that with a modern approach and sensibility, his new style would better suit the people of this era. By continuing to create without stagnation, he would lead to new creations and styles.

  • ─ On the Relationship Between Katakai momen and Mingei

    In Niigata Prefecture, there is a traditional dyed textile called Katakai momen. It has been found that the birth of Katakai momen is in no small part related to the “Mingei” movement advocated by Yanagi Muneyoshi and others in the 1920s. This paper focuses on the establishment and development of Katakai momen in the Ojiya region of Niigata Prefecture, and discusses in detail the interactions between Yanagi Yoshitaka, and examines how the Mingei ideas through Yanagi Yoshitaka influenced Niigata's dyed textiles. As a result, Yanagi sought to create high-quality products by making full use of new ways of using machines, rather than just using traditional hand-weaving methods, and Katakai momen was born in collaboration with Nishiwaki Shinjiro and Matsui Kiheita. Considering this history, I can point out that the new initiatives that Yanagi Yoshitaka, who was based on the idea of Mingei, were also developed and expanded in Niigata's dyed and woven products.

  • ─ Practice and Improvement with a Design-Based Research Approach

    This paper reports an educational practice of product design with a design-based-research approach to expand and deepen student's observation process for leading novel ideas using the perspective of cognitive psychology. We hypothesized the five design principles about instructional techniques in order to improve student's observation protocol based on their perception and cognition by making aware of their cognitive process and representation. We discussed the effectiveness and future issues based on the qualitative and quantitative results of our education practice.

  • ─ Study on Menotech Design (2)

    This study identified challenges in menopause care and requirements for Menotech design among menopausal women. Interviews were conducted with 10 women aged 40–60 in Tokyo, Japan. Using thematic analysis and text mining, participants' lifestyles, menopausal experiences, care practices, and use of Femtech and Menotech solutions were examined. Findings indicated that weak family and workplace support and poor medical experiences worsen menopausal symptoms and reduce quality of life (QOL). Consequently, four key requirements for Menotech services emerged: (1) reliable information, (2) services for menstrual health, health management, and exercise support, (3) an online platform for medical consultations and medication guidance, and (4) improved service quality. Addressing these needs can improve QOL of menopausal women and guide future design.

    In visual communication design, layout is the process of effectively conveying content using visual elements such as text, photos, and graphics. Designers must ensure that information is communicated efficiently and clearly, without confusion or cognitive load for the readers. However, in the digital age, the increase in similar designs has made creative expression more difficult. This study, conducted over two years of experiments, confirms the educational value of visual hierarchy and aims to help students apply it effectively in their designs, thereby expanding creative possibilities. Additionally, it examines the value of visual hierarchy in typography and evaluates its effectiveness through classes and surveys. The research suggests new approaches in design education, helping students enhance both their efficiency and creativity in the design process.
