Diary literature is not merely records of an author's life, but creative works in which the author attempts to express the sifted part of her "self" based on her experiences of loss. As the author writes her memories, their chronological order is broken up and they are reconstructed according to their significance to the author. Her memories become more and more enriched and fabritcaed. I have analyzed Kenrei-Mon'in Ukyo-Dayu Shu in terms of the characteristics I mentioned above, to discuss diary literature.

In the period when Gozan Literature was becoming more and more popular, Kokan Shiren was respected by many young Buddhist priests for his wide range of knowledge. What kind of influences did he give to those young preists who later were leaders of Gozan Literature? I discuss Kokan by presenting his uniqueviews of the world found in the "Biography of Daruma" in Genko Shakusho and his place in the history of Japanese literature.

When I analyzed the political novel Jokai Haran written in the form of fables by Toda Kindo, I found the author's intention significant in providing realistic descriptions. These allegorical and realistical descriptions are also developed in Keikoku Bidan and Ki-shu-shu. In the former I found the aim of the author to be transfer "real history" based on ideology into narratives, and in the latter I found the author's unique attitude combined with his emotions, moved towards realism. I have pursued the possibilities of early political novels with both narrative and realistic featues.

The impact of a writer's work is not the only thing to be recognized in the literary world. Arishima Takeo's debut, the Letter of Heibon-jin caused a sensation, which developed into an arguement in terms of the methods of criticism, Should this work be discussed as an episode or Arishima's personal history or as the visions seen by the group of people in the literary circles? Studying the aspects of criticism found the sixth year of Taisho era, I have pursued the process of criticism developing to be an independent genre of literture.

Aho Train, The Second Aho Train and The Third Aho Train are not travel descriptions but novels in which we find the influences of Botchan mechanism. He admired Soseki, the author of Botchan, so much as his teacher. Hyakken uses an ironical expression "Aho" in order to exaggerate his own personality. He described himself as "wagamama" (self-indulgence), "tonosama" (acting like a lord), "kanryo-teki" (bureaucratic), and finally "useless." By writing these novels, he attempted to resist the livery-like democracy after the war and disprove the situation that a man exists only to work as a tool for increasing products and profits.
