In his influential Nihon-kindai-bungaku-no-kigen, Kojin Karatani writes that there was no "landscape" in pre-modern literature. According to Karatani, before the Meiji Period the descriptions of nature were based not on the observation of nature itself but on the poetical formulas ready for use. It was not until the discovery of the modern "self" that what we call landscape appeared, because then the dichotomy of inside/outside became possible. Although this idea is very stimulating, it doesn't seem to hold true when the literary works of the Edo Period are widely and closely read. Indeed, some of them are found to have already indicated the beginning of the perspective from which nature was objectively seen and written.

Little attention has been paid to illustrations in studies on Heike-monogatari Here I will focus on the illustrations of the edition published in 1672, the 12th year of the Kanbun Period. The illustrations so strongly reflect the other works of the age, theatrical as well as literary, that the reader must have enjoyed decoding such contempo- rary references in the classical text. In this sense, the edition can be called the Heike-monogatari of the Kanbun Period.

Here from the viewpoint of a Korean teacher who teaches and studies Japanese waka poems, I will explore sentiments behind the two poetical season words, "autumn plants" and "the sounds of insects." The season words came directly from the popular culture of the early modern times. In the Edo Period, people bought wild flowers and insects from "grass vendors" and "insect vendors" to enjoy the beauty of flowers and the sounds of insects. The subject of autumn plants was popular also in drawings and craft works. The non-Japanese like me may have difficulty to fully appreciate cultural implications in the words. In the first place, it seems extremely hard to distinguish varieties of flowers or kinds of insects' sounds sung in waka poems. In Korea, for example, there is no custom to appreciate wild flowers in this way. The plants frequently used in Korean poems are plums, orchids, chrysanthemums, bamboo and spruces, all of which symbolize the essence of Confucianism. In spite of this cultural difference, Sochu-zu by Shinshi-Nindo has much in common with the Japanese view of plants and insects. As is shown in this essay, this is owing to the author's femininity.

In the Edo Period, lots of biographies written in Chinese were published. Among them there is a peculiar sort called "takuden." As is seen in Goryu-sensei-den, the pioneering work by T6-Enmei, the "takuden" biography is actually an autobiography written in a fictional style in which the author takes on the persona to narrate his own life. Here I will pick up Ichinoshi-den, a "takuden" published in the early Edo Period, to see how the Confusianist author Hayashi-Gaho imagines his own self in the person of Ichinoshi. In so doing, I will argue that Hayashi's choice of this form is related to his editorship of Honcho-tori-kagami and the premature death of his son-in-law Baito.
