In the eighth year of the Meiji Period, Robun Kanagaki was accused of plagiarizing Hideki Nagamine's Shina-jijo. The text in question Genkon-shina-jijo brought to the surface a gap between the traditional idea of authorship and the new system of copyrighting, and it caused a controversy over the standard of literary ethics. This essay, based on both Nagamine's and Kanagaki's claims, will show the cultural meaning of this plagiarism case.

During the late 1880s and the early 1900s the system of copyrights and royalties began to be established in Japanese literature, and most writers felt torn between writing as an sacred act and writing as business. It is in this transitional period that Koyo Ozaki organized his own publisher, the Kenyu-sha Press, and made a success. The point of this essay is to describe the ambivalent atmosphere of the literary world in the turn of the century and trace the mutation of literary values seen even in critical remarks against Koyo's commercialism.

Soseki Natsume's Gubijin-so is a text both aesthetically and economically determined. Its economic moment is most apparent in a character Fujio. Obviously the author allegorically represents Fujio as wealth and, through this character, expresses his hate for big business like the Mitsubishi interests. So in this sense the death of Fujio metaphorically represents the panic after the Russo-Japanese War.

Here, while reading Hiroshi Kikuchi's work, I will consider the economy of the community. Kikuchi grasped the social hierarchy in the old community, especially the relation between father and son, in terms of economics. His problem was thus how the new generation should repay their emotional debts to their fathers in the coming community. To Kikuchi, in short, the economy of the community was both economical and political.

"Enbon" books, cheap editions sold at the price of one yen, had a great popularity during the TaishoPeriod. Because of their availability, those books reached a wider range of readership and economically benefited writers with large royalties. But, on the other hand, they marginalized more traditional literary works and magazines. As a result, in the midst of the continuing depression of the day, many publishers suffered from a business slump and many writers had economic difficulties. Naturally younger writers among them were directly damaged. In this essay, focusing on the relation between literature and the marketplace, I will argue about the commercialization of literature between the Taisho and the early Showa Periods.

In his Nihon-keiba-dokuhon, Hiroshi Kikuchi systematically researched the pedigrees and racing records of horses and made a science out of what had seemed a mere gamble. As his famous remark "Trust data, but don't trust them at the same time" shows, however, he also mystified horse racing. In 1936, the year of the publication of Nihon-keiba-dokuhon, the Japan Racing Association was established, and in 1941 it started its magazine Yushun, which was severely censored by the government. Soon afterwards there appeared many books on horse racing which discussed its cultural meanings or meditated on its unpredictability. Even in some literary texts, horse racing was taken as a topic. Especially Teppei Kataoka's Shu-to-midori and Sakunosuke Oda's Keiba not only thematically deal with races but also develop their narratives on the very logic of horse racing.

Marxism had an extraordinary influence upon modern literature in Japan. In dealing with the problem of national identification, writers such as Hideo Kobayashi and Kenji Nakagami were deeply affected not only by Marx's communist ideas but also by his discursive style. Here I will discuss how those writers adapted Marx's economic discourses for their own literary discourses and challenged the ideological function of Japanese language.
