The boy-meets-girl story at the summer seaside, a cliche even now repeatedly used in popular songs, has its origin in the introduction of sea bathing in the early Meiji Period. As is typically seen in Suiin Emi's Kaisuiyoku, the pattern is that a female body at the seaside stimulates a man's desire and invites him to a romance on the beach or that a man "captures" a woman waiting for someone at the seaside. In such a phallocentric narrative sequence where her body is exposed to a man's eyes of desire, her gender is formed and defined.

The New Theater movement was organized by Kaoru Osanai, Kosaku Yamada, and Baku Ishii as a result of their ambition to make a drastic reform in dramaturgy. The advocates invented a new type of drama called "dance verse," in which any difference and distinction between major and minor theaters or between high and popular arts were obliterated. When the movement took place, a radio broadcasting started in Japan and fundamentally changed the quality of the audience. Thus the New Theater movement must be understood not just as an art movement but also in the context of a cultural shift in art production and reception.

Jiro Tsunoda's Ushiro-no-Hyakutaro, a comic serial in the weekly Shonen Magazine, featured spiritualism and supernatural phenomena and played an important role in the occultism fad of the 1970's. The story filled up with the author's encyclopedic knowledge on spiritualism caused a vogue for a Japanese version of Ouija board called "kokkuri-san" and a tremendous interest in psychic power. In this essay, I will examine what cultural "forces" worked to produce the occultist text and form this peculiar fad.

Yumiko Oshima is a woman writer who in her earlier career completed the modern realistic style of Japanese comics with her psychoanalytic description of the character's inner vision. After the 1980's, however, her works began to show the ultimate impossibility of representing inner vision in a psychoanalytic method. This was not only a turning point in a comic writer's career. More extensively, as the same kind of shift also occurred in literature, it indicated that modern system of representation based on self was coming to an end.

When the movement of cultural studies was introduced in Japan, the greatest impact brought about was probably that it had enabled us to recognize the political nature of the established disciplines. As can be seen in the reevaluation of popular culture which had been ignored or marginalized by intellectuals as "vulgar," cultural studies had the function to drastically criticize the ideologically charged stance of the academic institutions. In this sense, cultural studies were not merely one of theories but rather a moment to change our mode of thinking itself. The influence of the movement also reached into literature, but there its critical function seems to be almost lost. Now it is urgent to reconsider the role of cultural studies in literature and even their necessities in literary researches.
