It is well-known that Fujiwara Teika adopted a specially-invented system of using kana. Among the remaining texts written by Teika, Tosa Nikki is unique in containing many examples of exceptional spelling. Why didn't Teika apply the unique system of using kana? There are sevaral palusible answers to this question: one argues that Teika failed to make out the handwriting of Tsurayuki in the original text, while another indicates a confusion in the usage of kana as a result of the complicated rules about them. Taking these views into consideration, I will attempt to discuss this problem concerning the usage of kana in Teika's edition.

In this paper, I have attempted to contemplate the meaning of Minamoto no Tametomo's solitude described by Hogen Monogatari, considering the following facts: that Tametomo's judgement and assertion do not correspond with the unfolding of the Hogen Insurrection from the beginning to the end, that Tametomo is seen as "the pretender who wants to rule the world by himself," "the ungrateful son," and that Tametomo's bow and arrows have an extraordinary appearance. With the hope of redemption, I have also discussed how these characteristics contribute to the differing characterization of Tametomo from one text to another.

There is a structural difference in the military strategy described respectively in Genpeijosuiki and Taiheiki. For the analysis of the description of the battle, one needs to pay attention to the characteristics of the factual war itself. While Genpeijosuiki gives the description of battle scenes through the feelings of those who participate in them, Taiheiki depicts group movement from the viewpoint external to the action, rather than paying attention to individuals. The lack of concrete reality in the description of the Battle of Minatogawa in Taiheiki is due to the exposure of the weakness of the method and the attitude unique to the text, exaggerated in the attempt to construct a fictitious battle on the large scale.

In the early seventeenth century, many commentaries on Tsurezuregusa were published. The situation was such that it can be called the "Age of Commentaries" in the critical history of Tsurezuregusa. Among many commentaries, Tsurezuregusa Nozuchi, edited by Hayashi Razan, is particularly important. Moreover, the book's importance is not limited within the confine of Tsurezuregusa scholarship; it has influenced many aspects of early modern literature including kanazoshi (fantasies), ukiyozoshi (tales about social life) and joruri (drama). In this paper, I will investigate the application of the book's information to the plays by Chikamatsu.

Fukasawa Shichiro is a novelist who maintains a unique position through his sustained publication of the novels that disrupt modernistic assumptions of postwar Japanese literature. In this paper, I have examined Fukasawa's actual political commitment. He has consistently supported the left-Japan Communist Party, the United Students' Association (Zengakuren), Japanese Red Army (Sekigunha), United Red Army (Rengo Sekigun) and Japan Red Army (Nihon Sekigun). Underlying his commitment was an emotional radicalism that contained theoretical and factional contradictions. In the end, what Fukasawa sought was a kind of Utopia nurtured in the depth of his heart. I believe that the unique character of Fukasawa's revolt lay in that Utopia.
