In Kojiki and Nihon-shoki, Hiruko appears as the child of Izanagi-no-Mikoto, a demigod, who is carried away to some far-off place on a boat. In the early Heian Period, however, the Hiruko narrative was given two opposing readings. On the one hand, Nihon-kiko, the authorized annotation of Nihon-shoki, declared that she was not the demigod's child but a cursed being who should be purged. On the other hand, at the symposium, a courtier named Oe-Tomotsuna, mourning over his degradation, made a waka poem in which he identified his misfortune with Hiruko's destiny. The image of "poor Hiruko" came from this. It was so often repeated and reproduced in Genji-monogatari and other texts that at last it became a myth. The aim of this essay is thus to read the difference in interpretation between Nihon-kiko and Oe-tomotsuna and to discuss the meaning of the symposium as a myth-making site.

Yokokawa-no-Sozu, an esoteric Buddhist monk, wrote to Ukifune in the Yume-no-Ukihashi part of Genji-monogatari. The meaning of his letter is open to more than one interpretation, but it is probable that he suggested in it that Ukifune should be more securalized and engaged in religious work among the public. Indeed, Dainichikyo, the scripture of esoteric Buddhism, and its annotated version Dainichikyo-gishaku put a special emphasis on the importance of preaching Buddhist mercy to all the people. This idea can also be seen in Uji-jujo. Thus, with the faith in Buddhist mercy, Yokokawa-no-Sozu told Ukifune to work as "bosatsu" (a female Buddhist saint) in the secular world.

The Mitsui, one of the earliest and largest department stores in Japan, started its commercial magazine Hana-goromo in 1899. Among other articles there was a serial entitled "Muso-ri" by Hakuho Nakayama and Koyo Ozaki. The serial not only gave a literary taste to the brochure but also had the function of advertisement. For the fashion was depicted in the text in such a way as to interact with the one exhibited in the ad columns. This strategy would be repeated in Koyo Ozaki and Kyoka Izumi's "Gekka-en," which was serialized in Hana-goromo's succcesor Natsu-moyo. The literary serial in the commercial magazine thus provoked the desire of consumers and controlled fashions.

Katai Tayama usually uses a third-person narrator in his novels, but his texts give such a strong autobiographical impression on the reader that he/she often read them as if they were first-person narratives or stories about the author himself. This is why Katai's work is called "private fiction." In the third decade of the Meiji Period, when Inaka-kyoshi was published and realism was dominant in Japanese literature, however, contemporary readers' response was quite different from ours. In other words, they didn't appreciate Katai's fiction as his private monologues. In this essay, I will examine the way of reading novels in the Meiji Period and show how differently Katai was received then.

Osamu Dazai's "Hino-tori" reflects the political scene from the 1920s to the 1930s. The figure of a terrorist named Otohiko Suzuki, for example, refers to the terrorism by anarchistic communists in 1935 and the case of the Guillotine Society in the late Taisho Period. Suzuki's defeat and his lover Sachiyo's unsuccessful suicide make a striking contrast with the hedonistic atmosphere of the age. While the terrorist is symbolically killed by old values, Sachiyo's regeneration represents the expectation of a new order.
