Kojiki consists of three volumes. The first volume describes the mythical world called "Ashiharano Nakatsukuni", The second and third volumes relate stories of the Emperors' world, "Tenka"; these are based on the myths found in the first volume. "Tenka" insists that its world is unique. When we read the second volume from this point of view, we appreciate the historical descriptions of the structure of "Tenka". The inner construction is Oyashimaguni and the outer construction is Chokenkoku.

The phrase "Saruhodoni" is frequently used in the war chronicles. The phrase has two functions; one is used to indicate the passing of the time from one event to another, and the other is used to start a new topic or a new story. In the Yonrui-bon text of Heiji Monogatari, "Saruhodoni" is effectively used in the second function. I discuss the new method of narrative created as compared to the text found in "Ichirui-bon" (the First Category) text.

Some works of Hayama's show no intention of ever being completed. In part it is due to Hayama's personality. But I think Hayama exemplifies this tendency in a conscious manner under the extreme conditions of thought control practiced at the time. "Kyucho" (a bird in distress), which was published in July of the tenth year of Showa, appears to be a half-finished work. However, it typically exemplifies "Hanten Literature" as satire: a style which Hayama advocated during his life.

The Journal "Rodosha" (Workers), which was started by Miyajima Sukeo and Takao Heibei in April on the tenth year of the Taisho era and was discontinued after the tenth issue, has been discussed only on the level of the labor movement history. I attempt to find a place in literature for articles written by Miyajima and Takao, and to evaluate the poems and tanka poems written by Goto Kentaro. I provide a study of the commentary in the seventh volume of Miyajima Sukeo, which was completed last year and other published criticisms of Miyajima. I point out the errors in each.

Dazai Osamu's "Hashire Merosu" is adapted from Schiller's "Die Burgschaft", which has been previously translated by several authors. Soma Shoichi and many other critics assume that the model for "Hashire Merosu" is either Kimura Kenichi's or Tezuka Tomio's work. In both of the translations the name of the central character is "Damon". Which translation inspired Dazai to write the book? I assume that it was Oguri Takanori's translation, "Hitojichi" (included in the New Edition of the Selection of Schiller's Poems). In this translation the name of the central character is Merosu. I analyze how "Hitojichi" and "Hashire Merosu" are related.

In the Song of the Millstone, Tsuboi Sakae describes an island family who accept a cousin evacuated from. Hiroshima just before the atomic bomb explosion. Previously 'reliability' and 'deligence' of the author have been often discussed. However, I analyze 'reliability' and 'deligence' in terms of one's culture in the family, such as the spatial function of the kitchen in the house, the maternal authority created through the kitchen work, and the education of women in the family. The alternating of generation of women in the family and the system of overcoming a crisis in the family are also illustrated. The family life in the Song of the Millstone is created and lived by those systems of culture which help each member of the family to live peacefully with one another. I see this work as a description of a typical family life; one which faces crises and is hurt, but regains its family unity.
