Recently some studies about the role of black hair in Genji-monogatari have been done to shed light on the story's expressive mode. But here I will treat the thematic aspect of black hair. As is indicated in the same type of two women Fujitsubo-no-Miya and Murasaki-no-Ue, black hair is represented as the standard of beauty. Moreover, it is always involved in vital narrative sequences; for example, in Fujitsubo's religious retirement after refusing a forced marriage (see "Sakaki") or in Murasaki-no-Ue's wish to become a nun (see "Wakana II") and in her plan to enter religion after her death and the description of her body (see "Minori"). In this sense, Genji-monogatari can be called the story of black hair.

The question of whom this or that character is modeled after has been often raised in the studies of the first person novels of the Meiji Era. This seems innocent and sometimes useless. By researching the cultural background, however, it will lead to some more important questions; why did the author choose a person as the model of his/her story; did the model have any voice; why did roman a clef become so popular. In this essay, I will consider those model questions, especially in terms of the spatial mutation of the mass media.

Using reader-response theories always raises a question; what kind of reader should be supposed? Kan Kikuchi's newspaper serial Shinju-fujin was very popular although poor in literary quality. Thus it is necessary to read not only the text itself but also the cultural background in which it was received by the readers at that time or the assumption which the mass media like newspapers had about their audience. By so doing, the meaning of the flawed text's success can be fully understood.

Okinawan literature cannot but be political. I will examine its political nature by reading Okinawa-no-Shonen, a long forgotten story after Okinawa's return to Japan. This text may be categorized into "minor literature" in that it was written by a writer from the minority group in the established major language, that is, Japanese, which is not their own. In the story, everything in a boy's school and family life immediately assumes political and national aspects. Such a narrative development is very crucial for understanding Okinawan literature.
