A purpose of this study is to make indications of public open space utilization and apply the indication to cases in Yokohama suburban residential areas. This study classifies utilization in three functions and use seven indexes. We grasped "the public openness function" based on a ratio of an entrance of public open space. As a result, most public open space opened out more than 40%.We grasped "the walking function" from two indexes of "a ratio of an area of the sidewalk" and "degree of shortening of distance". and we showed most public open spaces had 3% to 4% of areas of the sidewalk. We grasped "the stay function" from three utilaization forms of a (1) rest (2) play (3)stroll. The authors had conducted field surveys in Chi-Chi Township since the 1999 Chi-Chi Earthquake to understand the post-disaster recovery process. This paper presents recovery curves for buildings in the area after the Earthquake. The recovery curves in terms of building type (temporary housings, public facilities, rebuilt buildings, and new buildings) were constructed using the building certification data of Nanto County. It was also clarified the differences of recovery process among them. The proposed methodology to construct recovery curves in damaged area will be essential for research into post-disaster recovery because it enables comparative studies related urban planning among different types of post-disaster recovery processes throughout the world.

For the last decade, improvement of an urban ecosystem has become a big issue for metropolitan cites in the world. Because there are few open space in these cities, it is difficult to create a new large habitat for organisms. In this paper, we analyzed the distribution of open spaces covered with vegetation on three different scales in Amagasaki City, Hyogo Pref., central Japan. Then, we designed an ecological network plan to improve biodiversity in an industrial area on reclaimed grounds. At last, we proposed some planting plans in a small factory, in order to create stepping stones on a gap of green spaces.

Today, the geotechnology is one of the significant fields in the digital earth era. It must change how to record the historical transition of urban recovery process using the cutting edge technologies and spatial information data. This paper demonstrates a trial of making urban recovery archive of Tokyo based on Google Earth as one of the case studies. The digital archive consists of 119 maps/pictures from 1838 to 1997 of some of the important areas in Tokyo (Marunouchi, Otemachi, kyobashi, and Nihonbashi), which present its dramatic historical change including the recovery process from the 1923 Tokyo Earthquake and from the destruction due to the World War II. Using some functions (overlay, timescale, and place mark), it is possible to compare different maps.

The purpose of this study is to clarify relations between town image constructed by the media and real towns. This study focused on spatial distribution of information on stores, especially eating and drinking establishments, and measured distinction between town image in terms of stores on the magazines or on the Internet and real towns. The coefficient of specialization was used to show to what extent each medium pays attention to each genre of stores and to each region. First, information magazines were analyzed which many people use for searching store information. Second, a store information website on the Internet was analyzed which is easy to access and on which impression of visitors to the stores can be posted. The analysis showed that each medium has its "favorite" genres of stores and districts, and that the town image on the media is different from real towns.

This study aims to forecast the prospective number of households and house stock of Tokyo. First we paid our attention to the relation between the house stock and the household composition, and established scenarios of newly established houses according to existing households forecast. Second, we simulated the relations between the number of households and house stock by assuming the distribution of building life of houses. As a result, houses more than 30 square meters in particular remain in downtown area and supply of houses under 30 square meters are insufficient in Middle Tokyo, in the case that houses are established by the same amount as present. In addition, detached houses get older mainly in 23 wards and condominiums get older in downtown area, in the case that the quantity of newly established houses are coordinated so as to meet the population.
