    The properties of three types of solid state fission track detectors for neutron dosimetry have been studied. The detectors were irradiated with monochromatic fast neutrons and a count was made of the number of etch-pits on the surfaces of the irradiated detectors after etching with suitable chemical reagents.
    The first type of detector examined was glass or mica, which was in contact with a thin film of thorium or uranium. The experiment proved that the sensitivity is in proportion to the amount of fissionable material per unit area. The second type was glass, mica or plastics, which was in contact with a thick foil of the fissionable material. It was shown that the measured sensitivity could be explained in terms of the range of the fission fragment in the fissionable material. The third type was metaphosphate glass, which was doped with thorium or/and uranium.. It was found that the dependence of the sensitivity on etching time could be explained from the thickness of the layer removed from the glass surface by the etching. A discussion is given of neutron dosimetry having a wide range of energy in mixed radiation fields with these detectors.

    A mass spectrometric method for measuring the isotope ratio of uranium was required for the purpose of evaluating the results of experiments on uranium hexafluoride in a project related to centrifugal separation.
    The present report covers results obtained in determining the various conditions governing the mass spectrometry of UF6. The UF+5 ion was adopted for the uranium isotope ratio measurement. Further experiments are undertaken to determine the most favorable conditions for measuring the uranium isotope ratio in respect of sample gas pressure in ion source, volume of electron beam and electron potential.
    The optimum condition thus determined were: specimen gas pressure in the ion source: 10-7 Torr, electron beqm: 0.3-0.5mA, electron potential: 70-90eV, accelerating voltage: 4.0-4.5kV.
    As an example of the accuracy attainable under such condition, a 235U/(1-235U) value of (0.7200+0.0005)×10-2 was obtained.

    The principal items of the Revised Long-Range Plan for Nuclear Energy of Japan are reported, which the Atomic Energy Commission of Japan published last June after twelve months of discussion. Marked changes that occurred during this period of deliberation to various aspects of Japanese economic society and developments in nuclear energy have already rendered obsolete some parts of the new long-range plan, while informal interference from financial authorities before publication had obliged some of the considerations given to important items to be presented in vague and uncommitting expressions. The author, emphasizing the necessity for changing the basic philosophy underlying the LongRange Plan, gives his views on: nuclear environmental policy and rationalization of licensing procedure, technical and human problems associated with wider application of nuclear energy, a demonstration power plant of the advanced thermal reactor and the urgency in the development of the multi-purpose high temperature reactor.
