A Japanese prototype fast breeder reactor "MONJU" is a 280 MWe loop-type, sodium-cooled fast breeder reactor (FBR) with U-Pu mixed oxide fuel.
The MONJU development program has been carried out as a national project by Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corporation (PNC), in collaboration with the government, universities and the private sectors including utilities and manufacturers. The program aims to develop an intermediate-scale precursor to a commercial reactor and to get experience with a power generating FBR.
The construction work began in October 1985, and completed on schedule in April 1991 with no significant problem. The pre-operational tests are presently underway.
The present report describes the MONJU plant including the main features of its subsystems and components. Some aspects of design, fabrication and construction work are also discussed.
