In order to simulate the heat exchanging system between the primary helium gas and the secondary reducing gas system of a multi-purpose VHTR, a hydrogen gas loop was constructed. The thermal performance tests of the heat exchangers as well as the thermal insulation in the high-temperature components of the hydrogen gas loop were made. The test conditions were almost the same as the operating conditions of the VHTR:
Hydrogen gas temperature: 900°C, Hydrogen gas pressure: 40kg/cm
2·G
Helium gas temperature: 1, 000°C, Helium gas pressure: 40kg/cm
2·G.
The results obtained were as follows;
(1) The experimental values of thermal performance of the heat exchangers, such as overall heat transfer coefficient and temperature efficiency, were in good agreement with the calculated ones. Accordingly it might be considered that the analytical method applied in this report was appropriate.
(2) The temperature distribution of the pressure tubes of high-temperature components were found to be almost uniform, and no hot-spots were observed. Since the effective thermal conductivity of the thermal insulation agreed fairly well with the other data, it could be as-sumed that no defect in packing of thermal insulation occurred.
