Bacterial DNA Polymerase I is a zinc metalloenzyme. The origin of the intrinsic zinc atom of the enzyme is from zinc ions contaminated in synthetic growth media. Removal of zinc ion by low concentrations of o-phenanthroline shows strong inhibition of bacterial growth. DNA Polymerase activity of bacterial cells grown in synthetic media supplemented with zinc sulfate (10-6M) is 3-8 fold higher than that of bacteria grown in non-zinc supplemented media. However growth rates of the bacterial cells in zinc supplemented and non-zinc supplemented media showed no difference, suggesting that DNA polymerase activities per cell in zinc supplemented media is higher than that in non-zinc supplemented media. These differences in activity may be due to a qualitative difference in the enzyme activity rather than a quantitative difference in bacterial DNA polymerase molecules. Heat stability of DNA polymerase activity from zinc supplemented culture far exceeds that from non-zinc supplemented culture. Results of the heat stability tests indicate that the activity of each enzyme molecule is increased. It is suggested that the qualitative difference of this enzyme is due to the incorporation of more than one zinc ion into the enzyme molecule with a resulting conformational change.

The glycosaminoglycans excretion was studied in the urine of normal human subjects from newborns to 68 years of age. The glycosaminoglycans preparation was made by digesting the urine with proteolytic enzymes followed by removal of enzyme and undigested protein and finally freeze-drying of the supernatant. Cellulose acetate electrophoresis was carried out on these preparations. Electrophoresis of urinary concentrates results in three alcian blue positive fractions. The proportion with the mobility of chondroitin sulfates fraction was high in childhood and thereafter decreased gradually with age, and that of heparan sulfate and keratan sulfate fraction was low in childhood. Any significant change in the fraction corresponding with hyaluronic acid could not be observed throughout the life.

We observed, under the scanning and transmission electron microscope, the case of a bean-size tumor which developed from the moment of his birth in the front tooth area of the lower jaw of a male new-born baby of 37 days. Clinically it was diagnosed as a case of congenital epulis and histopathologically confirmed the congenital fibromatosis. The observation under the scanning electron microscope revealed that the tumor consisted of basically fibrous connective tissue and partly of osseous formation structure. Transmission electron microscope served to observe the variety of fibroblast patterns such as fusiform, stellated and plane one etc., as well as the existence of abundant reticular and collagenous fibrils in its stroma. These findings under both electron microscopes suggest to consider on the hamartoma character of the tumor from mesenchymal tissue.

We studied the influence of pH, using 131I solution, as for a skin contamination and obtained the following results : 1) in regard to alkalinity, the skin surface contamination was large and in regard to acidity, the contamination in skin surface was less than in skin deep part. 2) the internal contamination in acidity was larger than in alkalinity.

On removing radioisotopes that contacted with skin, a contamination removal reagent was used. If radioisotopes was handled direct after use of the contamination removal reagent, the internal contamination got to be increased. For the prevention of it, hand cream was effective because the hand cream applied after use of the contamination removal reagent was reduced the internal contamination to 1/5 compared with no use of hand cream. The application of hand cream after use of the contamination removal reagent was simple way to prevent the internal contamination.

The effectiveness of BLM and FAMT, representative carcinostatic agents as supplements to radiotherapy was studied by serial biopsy.(1) our impression was that carcinostatic agents alone could not as yet produce satisfactory effects on cancer of the cervix.(2) In comparison of BLM and FAMT, there was a tendency for slightly more changes to appear with BLM.(3) With Radium used in combination, the tendency to degeneration presented itself more prominently with FAMT.(4) From the above it was made known that both BLM and FAMT did not show any marked characteristic changes histopathologically in cancer of the cervix and that the two still have some problems from the viewpoint of clinical application. However, these drugs used in combination with radiotherapy showed a tendency to early degeneration ; and therefore, they could possibly be more effective if the time, doses and method of administration are considered in using them that way.

By the application of critical electrolyte concentration theory to histochemical system, it was undertaken to differentiate in tissue sections between chondroitin 4-sulfate and chondroitin 6-sulfate. In model experiments, the critical electrolyte concentration of chondroitin 4-sulfate differed from that of chondroitin 6-sulfate when aluminium, zirconium or calcium was used as an electrolyte. Histological experiments showed a similar pattern of critical electrolyte concentration to that in the model experiments.

Clinical and histological studies were made on 174 alcoholics who were taken liver biopsy within about 2 weeks after admission.About two-third of patients had hepatomegaly and about 40% of those alcoholics revealed jaundice.Liver biopsy showed cirrhosis in about 20% of those alcoholics and alcoholic hepatitis in about 10% of them.Alcoholic hyaline was observed in 4 out of 21 cases with alcoholic hepatitis and in 10 out of 37 cases with liver cirrhosis. There were no significant differences in the age and quantity of alcoholic intake distribution in histologically devided 5 groups. So, duration and quantity of alcohol consumption does not seem to be essential for the cause of alcoholic liver injuries in our cases.Average MDA value was considerably higher in alcoholic liver injuries, suggesting some role of lipoperoxide in development of alcoholic liver injuries.
