Cells having morphological similarities to smooth muscle cells were observed in newly formed endothelium after gastro-gastrostomy in rabbits. Several possibilities for the involvement of non-endothelial cells in the process of neovascularization are discussed.

A cell line from HeLa cells was established, which did not show a cytopathogenic effect (CPE) to poliovirus infection. The cell line, designated PRHC-1, did not regain susceptibility after more than 100 passages for one year. The poliovirus type 1-Mahoney, Sabin -2 and Sabin -3 also were not infective to PRHC -1 cells, however a bovine enterovirus (MZ-468) was. No binding activity of PRHC -1 cells to poliovirus Sabin -1 was observed. A chromosome analysis demonstrated no significant difference between PRHC -1 and its parental HeLa cells. Immunofluorescence staining demonstrated no persistent infection in PRHC -1 cells.

We report a case of clear-cell chondrosarcoma at the upper end of femur of a 56 year-old woman. The tumor was first located eccentrically in the proximal epiphysis and had expanded even into the intertrochanteric region during the following three years. She developed spinal metastasis and died of pulmonary metastases ten years after the onset of the disease. Histologically, the tumor cells were found to exhibit the characteristics of both immature and mature cartilage cells. A close correlation between clear-cell chondrosarcoma and chondroblastoma was suggested not only by their locations but also by the close resemblance of the characteristics of their main tumor cells.

A case of multiple carebral aneurysms associated with a fenestration of the basilar artery is described. A 63-year-old woman complained of a headache and was transferred to our hospital on September 13, 1985. There were no neurological deficits, except for a mild headache and nuchal stiffness, on admission. A computerized tomographic (CT) scan revealed a subarachnoid hemorrhage. Right carotid angiography disclosed saccular aneurysms arising from the bifurcation of the opthalmic artery and the right internal carotid artery and from the trif urcation of the right middle cerebral artery. These aneurysms were successfully treated by neck clipping. The postoperative recovery was uneventful and a vertebral angiography was performed. This demonstrated a fenestration of the proximal basilar artery which is an uncommon anomaly of the cerebral vessels. The embryological basis of this anomaly is briefly discussed.

Bones of immature rabbits were irradiated during the growth period, and followed with bone scintigraphy using Tc-99 m methylene diphosphonate. The accumulation of the radionuclide was decreased in the irradiated bone at an early period as compared to the control side, and the decrease was more pronounced as the dose of irradiation was increased. In the groups irradiated with less than 4, 000 rad, the accumulation ratio reached a minimum at 5 weeks and was followed by a gradual recovery. In the group irradiated with 6, 000 rad, the recovery was small; and no recovery was observed in the 8, 000 rad group. These changes were compared to the inhibition of the longitudinal growth of the bone. The accumulation ratio for the radionuclide was a more sensitive index of the effect of radiation than the growth rate.

We report a case of a ruptured aneurysm occurring at the peripheral bifurcation of the azygos anterior cerebral artery with fenestration at the unilateral horizontal segment, A1. Further, hypoplasia was noted at the contralateral A1. It is considered extremely rare that an aneurysm is complicated by such a combination of anomalies. Presence of these anomalies might significantly influence hemodynamics, and hemodynamic stress might play an important role in the occurrence and growth of an aneurysm.
