Production of pulmonary schistosomiasis in rabbits was attempted by frequent intravenous injections of massive numbers of Schistosoma japonicum ova. The relationship between the extent of pulmonary involvement and the dose of ova injected was investigated histologically. The extent of parenchymatous and arterial involvement can be correlated to a gradual accumulation of egg emboli. However, they were essentially focal in distribution. It was concluded that S. japonicum ova that were frequently injected into the pulmonary microvasculature of rabbits did not evoke the diffuse and severe lesions leading to cor pulmonare.

There are various purification procedures for enteroviruses, depending upon the purpose of the experiment. HeLa S3 cells were grown at 37°C in a Roux bottle for virus multiplication. For the MZ-468 strain of bovine enterovirus, about 11 Roux bottles were sufficient for purification. 10 % polyethylene glycol 6000 was selected for the first virus precipitation step. This purification process gave a recovery of 43 % . A sucrose density gradient (SDG) was successfully formed with a hand -made apparatus, and was fractionated with a hand-made collecting system using a peristalic pump. CsCl bouyant density gradient centrifugation was superior to SDG centrifugation. Even after one cycle of purification with CsCl, a comparatively pure virus preparation was obtained. The purity was checked by electron microscopy and SDS-PAGE analysis of virion proteins. Infectious virion RNA was obtained from the virions which were purified according to this method.

RNase Tl oligonucleotide mapping analysis using 32P contributes to the identification and classification of various kinds of viruses. The MI-320 strain of bovine enterovirus was labelled with H3PO4 in vivo for the mapping analysis. One cycle of CsCl centrifugation of the crude virus derived from 4 Roux cultures yielded a significant amout of purified virion from which the virion RNA was isolated. Agarose-acrylamide gel electrophoresis of this RNA gave a single sharp peak at a position slightly ahead of the 28 S mouse ribosomal RNA. The specific radioactivity of this virion RNA was not sufficient for the RNase Tl oligonucleotide mapping analysis.

A Cytocentrif uge was found to be an effective and rapid tool preparing cytological samples from cerebrospinal fluid for diagnosing bacterial, neoplastic and viral meningitis as well as herpes simplex encephalitis. Using the centrifuge, we have been able to make early diagnoses for various type of the disease and to give prompt treatments for patients. Some of our successful cases using the system were listed as follows: (1) After observing vacuolated phagocyte with coccus which was definitely bacterial meningitis, patients could be administered immediately antibiotics. (2) A patient of herpes simplex encephalitis whose phagocytes either with hemosiderin and erythrocytes or hemosiderin showed excellent result with adenosine arabinoside. (3) Tumor cells in the first tap from the lumbar of a patient of meningeal carcinomatosis were readily demonstrated with this system. (4) Only in the viral meningitis, lymphocytes with multilobulated nuclei which resembled abnormal adult T-cell leukemia cells and atypical lymphocytes were observed.

A rare case of IgG myeloma with meningeal involvement is described. By reviewing 13 reported cases of meningeal infiltration by systemic myeloma, IgD myeloma, leukemic transformation and pleural effusion were found to be the risk factors for the meningeal involvement in these cases.

Two case histories of patients with massive intestinal bleeding resulting from a ruptured submucosal artery of the small intestine are presented. The onset in both cases was acute, with massive rectal bleeding and shock. The bleeding lesion in both cases was jejunum and in one case emergency angiography was very useful in identifying the bleeding site. Histologically, the vascular lesion in each case consisted of a wide caliber artery lying in the submucosal layer. This entity was similar to “exulceratio simplex” of the stomach, described by Dieulafoy in 1898. The prognosis was very good.

The non-stress test (NST), a measure of normal fetal movement and accompanying acceleration, is a useful method of perinatal fetal evaluation. The fetal movement and spontaneous onset of fetal acceleration observed in normal fetus suggests a coordinated control of both these functions, presumably arising in the fetal central nervous system (CNS). Since the developmental features of the regulation mechanism of fetal heart rate and fetal movement by the fetal brain in mid trimester are not known, interpretation would be rather speculative. The present prospective study was designed to evaluate the landmarks of normal fetal development in mid trimester by NST. The study revealed the following: 1) Maternal perception of fetal movements were closely associated with trunk movements observed to last for 1 second or longer by real-time B-scanning. 2) The ratio of fetal movement to total accelerations increased with the progression of pregnancy during 20 to 32 weeks' gestation. 3) The majority of accelerations in fetal heart rate had amplitudes within the range of 10-15 bpm before the 30th weeks' gestation and 15 bpm or greater at or after the 30th weeks' gestation.

The effects of neuroleptics on dopamine release from rat striatal slices was investigated with a superfusion system. Haloperidol (10-5M), chlorpromazine (10-4M) and sulpiride (10-3M) induced a significant increase in dopamine efflux from rat striatal slices. The onset of the enhancement of dopamine efflux was slower with superf usion of haloperidol than with methamphetamine. This data suggests that the mechanism of enhancement of dopamine efflux by haloperidol may be different from the mechanism of methamphetamine.

Pathomorphological studies were undertaken on the gastro-esophageal wall to examine the change of esophageal varices following endoscopic injection sclerotherapy (EIS) in 18 patients. Thrombus formation of various degrees was observed in 17 of the 18 cases. Red thrombus was the main thrombus when death occurred within 22 days after EIS, and when the patient was alive for a considerably longer time after the therapy, an organized thrombus was usually seen with partial recanalization. The change in the esophageal wall was less striking with the intravariceal method by Ethanolamine Oleate than with para-variceal method by Paoscle (5 % Phenol Almond Oil) ; but the lesions, such as ulcers and necrosis, reached to the muscle layer or the tunica adventitia in some cases which had been treated by the intravariceal method. Fibrosis may then have taken place to cause esophageal stricture. Edema, inflammatory cell infiltration and ulcer formation in the submucosal layer were seen in the cases which died in an early period after the treatment. These lesions seemed to have favorable effects, promoting thrombus formation and retarding recanalization of the organized thrombus.

We attempted to use ultrasonography in the diagnosis of pleural diseases. Fifty-eight patients with a pleural opacity on the chest radiography were studied. The ultrasonographic appearances of the pleural opacities were categorized as the echo free pattern and the echogenic pattern by the amount of internal echoes which emanate from the lesion. The echo-free pattern was classified as the septation pattern, the debris pattern and the free pattern. An appropriate amount of fluid was obtained at thracocetesis in 43 of 56 cases. Of 30 cases in which ultrasonographic appearances were not sonolucent, pleural fluid was obtained at thoracocentesis despite the presence of internal echoes. In this study, it is clarified that ultrasonography is a useful method for the observation of the thoracic internal structure in radiopaque conditions.
