In human cases and experimental animals of schistosomiasis japonica, schistosomal eggs are often detected in the lungs. On a derivation of the intrapulmonary eggs many reviews are reported. Though the major opinions are that they flow into the lungs from the portal vein and the hepatic vessels in which the flukes mainly inhabit, the route by which they reach the lungs is not known with certainty. In order to study the problem, rabbits were infected with cercariae of Schistosoma japonicum, and observed for 2 or 32 weeks thereafter, and histological specimens were cut into serious sections and stained, and then stereographical scrutiny was carried out by the sketching reconstruction method. Some worms lying within the pulmonary artery occasionally had mature eggs in their uterus, moreover, there were thrombi with eggs or egg nodules in its peripheral branch. These findings suggest with positive fact that the eggs in the lung are produced not only owing to an inflow from the portal vein, but also owing to a direct egg-laying in the lungs.

The loss of DNA from human lymphocytes during trypsin or a-chymo-trypsin treatment was investigated with cytof luorometry. The decrease of fluorescence intensity was most remarkable with trypsin treatment, even when incubation was carried out at 4°C. In contrast, α-chymotrypsin treatment had very little effects on the fluorescence intensity.

The corneal neovascularization was observed in adult rats after the application of heat. The new capillaries are formed in associated with the tips of the limbal vessels by transformation of young f ibroblasts to endothelial cells. The present observations have no inconsistencies with the previous hypothesis that the corneal edema is a “necessary condition” for the neovascularization. However, the study indicates that aggregation of abundant young f ibroblasts in the limbal region by mesenchymal reaction is “also necessary” for the neovascularization. New capillaries in the corneal stroma are sinusoidal type similar in structure to hepatic capillaries. Free passage of blood cells and plasma across the wall is frequent. Significance of mast cells for the corneal neovascularization was discus-sed. They may play a role for the venous edema as well as the connective tissue remodelling.

Recent progress in early diagnosis and chemotherapy of hepatocellular carcinoma has brought about certain changes in tumor pathology. The frequency of extrahepatic metastases has been 64% among 225 autopsies in our Department of Pathology, but it seems to be on the increase when studied chronologically. Tumor growth in the right atrium and bile ducts which was considered to be rare in the past was seen in 10 cases each, and intra-bronchial tumor growth in another case in recent years. This communication is maily concerned with the clinical and pathological findings in these cases.

High polymer chondroitin (molecular weight more than 50, 000 Daltons) was detected in the urine of premature neonates. Ten and eleven days after birth, they constituted 21.5 and 14.0% of the total excreted glycosaminoglycans respectively. By contrast, high polymer partially or low sulfated chondroitin sulfate was not detected in the urine. Subsequently with extra-uterine life, sulfation increased and the amount of the high polymer fraction decreased to that excreted in the urine of full term neonates. Hyaluronic acid is not found in the urine of premature neonates for the first 10 days of life, though it is present in the urine of full term newborns.

Six autopsy cases of 18 trisomy were reported in this paper. The abnormal chromosomal pattern was demonstrated with chromosomal studies of the patients. There were various external and internal malformations in these cases as characteristic features of 18 trisomy syndrome.

Cardiac muscle mitochondrial fraction was prepared from rat heart homogenate, according to the procedure of differential centrifugation following nagarse digestion. The biochemical intactness of isolated mitochon dria was identified by determining the oxygen consumption of respiratory chain. The field emission scanning microscope examination of the isolated mitochondria indicated that mitochon-dria maintained their structural in tegrity throughout the isolation procedure. The mitochondrial fraction treated with nagarse in the process of pre paration was identified to be intact and useful for the study of cardiac muscle mitochondria.
