    Uranyl tribenzoate, formed in benzoate-benzoic acid media, was extracted into chloroform in combination with quaternary ammonium salts (DMBPAC, TEBAC and TEPAC) at pH 2.5-5.5 in the ratio of 1:1. The plot of logD against pH indicated third power dependence of pH. Similar plots of logD vs. log[B-] also showed a slope of 3. The ratio of uranyl, benzoate and quaternary ammonium was 1:3:1; thus it is suggested that uranyl tribenzoate had formed an ion association complex with quaternary ammonium cations.
    The extraction of uranium is seriously impaired by the presence of WO24-(10-3M) and Cu(II)(10-2M), and these impurities must be carefully eliminated. Over 90% of U was extracted in the presence of Fe(III), La(III), Sr(II), Ca(II), Mg(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Co(III), (10-2M each), AsO33-(10-3M) or Th(IV)(10-3M). Uranium in the chloroform was quantita- tively back extracted with 0.5M sulfuric acid, and was determined by polarographic method.

    (1) The adsorbing capacity for uranium shown by titanic acid prepared in homogeneous and acidic solution was found larger than titanic acid prepared in nonhomogeneous and neutral solution. The uranium adsorbed on titanic acid increased with rising temperature of sea-water. The adsorption reached equilibrium within 2 days. The concentration of uranium in the titanic acid was found experimentally to have a maximum value of U/Ti=1, 500μg/g.
    (2) The concentration of uranium adsorbed on the titanic acid at a given temperature was determined by the amount of sea-water and the concentration of uranium in seawater on the same titanic acid. An empirical formula was obtained for this relationship; the adsorption was applied to Freundlich's isotherm, and the distribution coefficients were found nearly constant within the range of sea-water volume covered by the present experiment.
    (3) The adsorption capacity was estimated from the term of multiplication of the distribution coefficient and the concentration of uranium in sea-water. The maximum value evaluated was U/Ti=4, 200μg/g, with the titanic acid prepared by hydrolysis.
    (4) The uranium adsorbed on the titanic acid increased with rising temperature of the sea-water, the empirical relationship being c=k exp (αtt2), (c: concn. of U, t: temp., k and α: const.).

    The Irradiation Research Laboratory in JMTR, owned and operated by the Research Institute for Iron, Steel and Other Metals, Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan was established in 1968 adjacent to the JMTR at the Oarai Research Establishment of the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute.
    The Laboratory possesses facilities for basic studies, hot laboratory for studies on irradiated fuels and materials, and equipment for the preparation of ceramic single crystals. The Laboratory is available to research workers from all national universities in Japan.

    The national research project on food irradiation was started in 1967, and is now making good progress in accordance with the programme laid out for its activities. Sprout inhibition of potatoes and onions was the subject first selected for excution, and considerable study has been undertaken on the effects of irradiation and health hazards. A description is presented of the results obtained with investigations on potato, which is considered to be the most promising subject of such treatment.
    (1) Large scale irradiation tests on three different varieties of potato indicated that potato sprout could be inhibited for 8 months when irradiated within 3 months of harvest to doses of 7-15 krad.
    (2) Extensive investigations have been carried to determine the health hazards that would be occasioned by the irradiated potatoes. While the final conclusion is not yet to be reached, the results obtained so far do not indicate the existence of any problems related to health hazards associated with the irradiated potatoes.

    We have described in Part (I) the design principles, and in Part (II) a summary of the aseismic design of important components such as the reactor building, containment and pressure vessel. Following Part (II), we take up here the design of reactor internals, equipment and piping.
    In respect of piping, a summary of vibration tests is also given.
