Comparisons were made on the characteristics of LiF, natural CaF
2, Mg
2SiO
4 (Tb) and CaSO
4 (Tm) thermoluminescence dosimeters. These dosimeters can be classified into two groups, tissue equivalent materials and highly sensitive dosimeters. The former, including LiF, were not found suitable as personnel monitors, but the latter, including CaF
2, CaSO
4 (Tm) and Mg
2SiO
4 (Tb), were suitable. The properties of the the rmoluminescence dosimeters were compared with those of the pocket chamber, the film badge and the glass dosimeter. It is concluded from these results that the first named dosimeters possess useful properties as a personnel monitor.
