Highly advanced technology related to LWRs can be achieved by improvement of reliability of components and parts, improvement of efficiency of periodic inspection, extension of operating period, optimization of operating cycle and simplified maintainability of plant facilities. The life extension of components and parts to extend replacing period and improvement of reliability thereof for easier maintenance together with improved and development for reduction of radiation exposure volume are essential. Accordingly positive use of new materials superior with physical and chemical stability to be speedily developed is strongly desired, in addition to improvement of quality of facility composing materials for existing components and parts.
To achieve the objectives, ANERI (Advanced Nuclear Equipment Research Institute) is responsible for (1) studying possibility of new materials application to components and parts for LWRs, (2) carrying out applicability evaluation tests of new materials to LWRs environment, (3) improvement, development and evaluation of new materials and (4) verification tests for components and parts employing new materials, and to develop components and parts for LWRs with high reliability and long durability.

A boric acid concentration meter was developed for continuous measurment of the 10B concentration in heavy water in a nuclear reactor. The principle of the meter is based on slowingdown of fast neutrons from a radioisotopic neutron source by heavy water and absorption of slowed-down neutrons by 10B depending on its concentraion.
The errors in the measurement are casused by temperature changes, photoneutron generation etc. in sampled heavy water and instrumental instability of a neutron measuring system. Laboratory tests with fresh heavy water containing no γ-emitter and demonstration tests at "FUGEN" power plant were carried out, to evaluate the factors of errors separately, and correction techniques for photoneutrons etc. were developed.
The results of the tests showed that the meter developed had a measurement precision better than ±0.1ppm 10B in a range of 0-30ppm 10B.

This paper deals with a systematic method for improving reliability of a large system such as a nuclear power plant.
In the first step, an assessment table and score sheet are developed for allocating system reliability target to each subsystem. Then, important subsystems are pinpointed by comparison between the reliability target and FTA value of each subsystem.
In the second step, a combinatorial optimization technique is used for obtaining optimal combination of countermeasures among subsystems which satisfy the reliability target.
After this method is discussed in detail, its application to a BWR nuclear power plant is described.

Bonding test of six kinds of graphites to molybdenum was performed in the following conditions:
Brazing elements was obtained by mixing of titanium nickel and copper in the range of 90-51w/o, 40-10w/o, 31-0w/o, respectively. Nonpressed brazing was performed at maximum temperature 1, 000°Cin a vacuum. Strength tests of these brazed joints were done in the conditions of at high temperature up to 1, 100°C in a vacuum, after 200 heat cycles from room temperature to about 900°C. Optical observation were performed before and after electron beam tests at 3.0kW/cmcm2·0.1s·5 shots.
    The following results were derived:
    (1) The good mixing condition was found for titanium, nickel and copper brazing material at 64, 23 and 13%, respectively.
    (2) Bending strengths of the brazed joints at room temperature were found to be proportional to the bending srtengths of the graph ite.
    (3) Bending strengths of the brazed joints shows no change until tested temperature reached 900°C in a vacuum.
    (4) Bending strength of the brazed joints showed no cbange after 200 heat cycles in the temperature range of room-about 900°C and the electron beam tests.

To evaluate the characteristics of groundwater flow and nuclide migration through unsaturated loamy soil, various field tracer experiments have been carried out using both nonreactive tracers (D2O, Br-) and reactive tracers (Sr, Co, Cs). The present paper discusses the migration characteristics of reactive tracers under the direct influence of natural rainfall and evapotranspiration.
The infiltration rates of reactive tracers such as Sr, Co and Cs were smaller than those of nonreactive tracers. Particularly, most of injected Cs remained near the tracer in jection plane, i.e. the ground surface. The retardation phenomenon was caused by the adsorption of reactive tracers by loamy soil. The temporal and spatial variation of the distribution coeffcient (KdT) of reactive tracers obtained by field experiment ranged from 10-2 to 10102ml/g. This widely dispersed KdT value showed dependency on the concentration of the tracer itself and coexisting cation. The KdT value obtained by the field experiment was consistent with that obtained by the batch experiment considering the concentration dependency. In addition, the selectivity coeffcients of reactive tracers were almost constant with respect to coexisting Ca, and this indicates that the adsorption of reactivet tracers mainly resulted from ion exchange reaction.
