    According to the writers' previous reports it was supposed that the parasitic vitality of rice nematodes seems to be related with the cultural environment of rice plants in the paddy field. By the agricultural request, the writer studied the problem from the practical stand point, mainly the influence of the soil moisture, the high temperature, shaded condition and different dressing conditions. The present studies were done using the experimental pots from 1955 to 1957. The results are as follow ; 1. The parasitic vitality of rice nematodes in wet soil seemed to be remarkably lower than in impounded water. But when the seeds were sowed two days after injection of the water including nematodes in the surface of the wet soil, a considerably heavy injury occurred. 2. Although the injuries of the hills are stronger in the impounded water condition than in the wet soil condition, it was observed in both conditions that the higher the temperature becomes, the heavier is the injury of the hill. But on the other hand, after harvest the population density of the nematodes in unhulled rice is higher in the pots placed in the shade and covered with wersh-reed screens than in those piaced under high temperature condition within a greenhouse. 3. The influence on rice nematodes caused by the nitrogenous fertilizer, the calcium silicate and the urea is not distinct, but the injuries of rice plants in each pot ground-dressed with such fertilizers as ammonium sulphate, superphosphate of lime and potassium chloride tend to be rather stronger than those ground-dressed with only calcium silicate or with only urea sprayed on the leaves of the rice plants. However, the population of the nematodes in unhulled rice observed after harvest is similar in both cases.

    L'hierarchie des groupements vegetaux aux prairies ne s'est pas encore etablit au japon, Nous avons compare les releves phytosociologiques dans les regions volcaniques d'Aso et de Kuzyu, mais les associations ne se sont pas obtenu par l'inspection directe des tableaux. Alors nous avons extrait les cinq groupements des releves par predominance et codominace des trois especes importantes, Miscanthus sinensis, Pteridium aquilinum et Arundinaria pygmaea. Parmi ces trois especes, la value de coexistance quantitative(Spezifische Massen-Gemeinschafts-Koeffizient) est un peu plus large entre le Miscanthus et l'Arundinaria qu'entre ces deuxet le Pteridium. D'ailleurs, chaqun des cinq groupes est caracterise par 8 a 17 especes des hautes values de coexistence et par 1 a 5 especes exclusives aussi bien sauf le groupe 3. Nous avons examine, d'ailleurs, le differences(Differenzwert selon RAABE, un peu modifie), et trouve qu'ils soient suffisamment independents, mais les groupes 1-3 un peu s'ecartent des groupes 4-5. Les trois premiers predomines par Miscanthus et Arundinaria constituent une serie de promotion sur le sol volcanique, tandis que les deux derniers une de regression par paturage. Le premier groupement conprehensif soit une alliance(Le Miscanthion, nom, nov.) et le dernier aussi une autre(Le Zoysion, nom. nov.).

    Rearing experiments were undertaken to find the stages susceptible to effect the crowding to produce the two wing-forms, the brachypterous form and the macropterous form, in the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens STAL. As shown in Fig. 1,the brachypterous female and the macropterous male are obtainable at a density of 1(number of larvae per rearing tube, 2 cm in diameter and 17.5 cm in length), the brachypterous female and male are characteristic at a density of 5,though not so high percentage in the latter, and the macropterous female and male are obtained at a density of 20(KISIMOTO, 1956). Therefore, the larvae were transferred between two rearing densities of the three at various stages to find the stages susceptible to the effect of crowding. The results are shown in Fig. 2. 1. In the female, high densities during the 2nd to the 4th larval stage induce the appearance of the macropterous form and low densities induce that of the brachypterous form. 2. In the male, high percentages of the brachypterous form are produced among the larvae reared at a density of 5 during the 1st to the 3rd larval stage, and a few brachypterous forms are also produced at a density of 20 during the 1st to the 2nd stage. The susceptible stages to effect the crowding are localized a little earlier than those of the female. From this result the presence of the optimum density for the appearance of the brachypterous male which was proposed by the author in the previous paper (KISIMOTO, 1956)is proved. 3. The 3rd larval stage is most sensitive to the effect of density determining the wing-form in both sexes and the effect during the 1st, 2nd and the 4th larval stages modifies that of the 3rd stage. The 5th stage is considered to occur almost after the determination. 4. In the experiments in which the larvae were transferred between densities of 1 and 5,the macropterous and he brachypterous forms were produced in both sexes in various percentages. The brachypterous male presents the highest developmental speed, the macropterous female the lowest and the macropterous male and the brachypterous female are intermediate. It is interesting that this divergent occurrence of the wing-form was induced without accompanying any considerable change of the average developmental speed of the whole members. This divergence may be considered to be an adaptive character of the population.
