In the previous report we conld confirm as the result of our research that the T. T. C. method published by Neal and Calbert was practically applicable to detecting antibiotics contained in milk, and made public a new test procedure for the same purpose in modification of this method.
In this report we tried to determine whether the widely used reagents, methylene blue and resazurine, could replace the conventional one, T. T. C., used in the above-mentioned methods. Judging from our experimental results obtained, it was made clear that the both reagents were usable in replacement of T. T. C. and among them the application of resazurine was less time-consuming and more practical than T. T. C.

Boiled rice, bean-curd, boiled beans, rice cake filled with bean-jam, steamed sweet-potato, picles of greens or failed sake often becomes sour.
In such cases sour taste was proved to be caused by acetic acid which was produced by lactic acid bacteria of hetero-type.

Commercial Orange I was submitted to paper chromatography with developing solvent of BuOH: EtOH: 1% NH₄OH (6:2:3, by volume) and the subsidiary dye fraction was extracted from paper with dil. NH₄OH. After evaporation of solvent, the residue was dissolved in water. This solution was analysed by high-voltage paper electrophoresis described in the previous report [This Journal, 2, No. 2, 44 (1961)].
As a result, 2-p-sulfophenylazo-1-naphthol was identified besides Orange II in commercial samples of Orange I.
Spectrophotometric determination of these two subsidiary dyes was successively carried out.
There is a marked difference in the absorption cruve of these dyes which are dissolved in 0.1N NaOH respectively. It is possible, therefore, to determine the amount of each dye present in a mixture of the two simultaneously.
It was recognized that 2-p-sulfophenylazo-1-naphthol was present about 3-5% in almost commercial samples of Orange I.

Influence of Plastic Packaging Materials on the Growth of Rats

We experimented on plastic packaging materials of food to find out whether they were toxic or not. Rats were used in testing the plastic packaging materials and their effect on rats were noted.
Samples were prepared from three kinds of plastic packaging material each of which was boiled for 30 minutes in three different ways given below.
(1) boiling in water (90°C).
(2) boiling in acetic acid (pH 4.0, 90°C).
(3) boiling in lard (90°C).
After boiling the materials were filtered and we used the filtrates as samples.
The samples were mixed with a standard feed (produced dy Oriental Yeast Company) and given to albino rats for 71 or 73 days. During this period the weight or rats, weight of feed eaten and condition of the internal organs were examined.
From these growth tests on the rats no remarkably abnormal changes were noticed. However, as there may be other factors which have an influence on the growth of rats we could not determine whether the plastic packaging materials were toxic or not. Therefore, we would wish to continue research on this problem.
