Vapor-liquid equilibrium data for binary systems containing carbon dioxide: CO2-C2H6, CO2-C3H8, CO2-n-C4H10, CO2-iso-C4H10, CO2-C2H4, CO2-C3H6 and CO2-1-C4H8 were determined by the vapor recirculation method in the low-temperature range (-41.6°C-0°C). The CO2-C2H4 and CO2-C2H6 systems formed minimum-boiling azeotropes. The modified Redlich-Kwong equation of state was used to calculate vapor-liquid equilibria of these systems. It provided fairly good agreement with experiment.

The character of large disturbance waves in upward two-phase flow of air-water mixtures was studied statistically by analyzing the film thickness fluctuation obtained by electrical conductivity method. The experiment was carried out in 10 mm ID glass tube. The distribution of film thickness, periodicity and frequency of fluctuation, which were estimated by adopting the autocorrelation function and spectral analysis; wave velocity, which was estimated by analysis of cross-correlation function of film thickness fluctuation; and wave separation distance were measured. These values were correlated with the gas and liquid flow rates and flow patterns.

The stream functions approximately satisfying equations of motion for laminar flow around a single drop moving in a viscous fluid are numerically solved in the low Reynolds number region by use of Galerkin''s method in a way similar to that of Hamielec et al..
The accuracy of the results obtained is discussed both for the drag coefficient and for mass transfer in the continuous phase and is compared with experimental data from the literature. As a consequence, the approximate stream functions assumed in this work show good agreement with the experimental data from the literature in the range of Reynolds numbers less than twenty.
An equation of mass transfer rate in the continuous phase for a drop with moving surface is proposed for the condition that the viscosity ratio is less than about three and the Reynolds number is less than twenty.

The effect of liquid-subcooling on film-boiling heat transfer is estimated theoretically for the range
    0.5 ≤Pr ≤2.0, 0.03≤≤ ≤ ≤ 4.0, 0.1 ≤Q (heat flux parameter)≤≤ 2.0
It is observed from the results that the subcooled conditions of the liquid patch exert influence upon heat transfer rates for a practicable range of the heat capacity parameter. This aspect, hitherto not considered, reveals profound influence on the evaporation rates of the liquid patch, under spheroidal conditions. A comparison of the analysis with the experimental data reveals reasonably good agreement, substantiating the theory proposed.

A simple technique is proposed to determine the intraparticle diffusivities of adsorbents from concentration change in an agitated tank. Pore diffusion and rectangular isotherm are assumed to derive the theoretical solutions, which are then compared with the experimental results. The theory gave a good prediction for the transient concentration profile in the tank. The effective diffusivities of 2•dodecylbenzene sulfonate in four different activated carbon particles are determined by the proposed technique.

The effect of the insulation of a circular isolated electrode on the measurement of local mass transfer rates by the electrochemical method was investigated theoretically and experimentally. Three kinds of model for the velocity profile adjacent to the electrode were proposed and compared with experimental results, which were obtained with four kinds of isolated electrode in twodimensional flow. It was found that the apparent local mass transfer coefficients for an isolated electrode with insulation coaxially around it were rather greater than the true values. The ratio between these two coefficients was a function of the outer radius of the insulation, r2 and the relative area of the isolated electrode, Ø. The experimental results were in good agreement with the theoretical results. The results might be applicable to estimating true local mass transfer coefficients from apparent ones.

The film theory solution is presented for gas absorption with two-step reversible and irreversible consecutive reaction, 2A⇔+A (a) and A*+BαP (b), when the volume of the main body of the liquid is finite. The enhancement factor depends on the volume of a0(=k-m''⇔). For a small value of ⇔, the variation of the enhancement factor between those accompanied by the w-th and the (m-m''+1)-th order reaction can be elucidate by varying the value of a0 from zero to infinity. Further, the enhancement factor for gas absorption accompanied by consecutive reaction (a) and (b) is derived by the van Krevelen approximation. For a small value of ⇔, the enhancement factor also shifts between those accompanied by the m-th and the (m-m''+1)-th order reaction as the value of a0 varies from zero to infinity.

Reactions of iodine in aqueous phase were studied by a concentration relaxation method. From the result of the present investigation, the mechanism of the absorption of iodine in air by aqueous sodium hydroxide solution is as follows:
(Step 1) Molecular iodine in air dissolves into the aqueous phase through the gas-liquid interface according to Henry''s law.
(Step 2) Instantaneous reversible reactions take place in the aqueous phase and HIO, I- and I3- form.
(Step 3) HIO formed by the above reaction is consumed gradually and IO-3 forms, while the instantaneous reversible reactions of step 2 are in equilibrium at any instant.
Overall consumption rate of HIO can be approximated by the rate equation of the second-order reaction with respect to HIO.

Reactions of methyl iodide in aqueous sodium hydroxide solutions were studied by determining the concentrations of all measurable chemical species participating in the reactions. It was found that methyl iodide reacts competitively with both water and hydroxide ion in dilute solutions. The reaction rate constants were determined at temperatures from 25 to 65°C. The activation energy of hydrolysis reaction was 27.6 kcal/g-mol and that of reaction of methyl iodide with hydroxide ion was 22.0 kcal/g-mol.

A microbial growth model for a sequence of biochemical reactions is proposed here, taking inhibitors into account. Parameters of the model are estimated in light of the experimental data on batch cultivation of a respiration-deficient mutant of bakers'' yeast. Substituting these parameters into the model, a continuous culture, i.e., the transient behavior of the yeast cell growth before attaining steady state has been analyzed. The calculations attempted so far with respect to batch and continuous cultures have been justified by experimentation.
Starting from the model proposed herein, a feedforward control has been studied to meet with variations expected of the microbial growth in continuous cultures operated inherently with long residence time in a flowing medium.

Heat transfer coefficient between fluidized bed and a small heater in vibro-fluidized bed was investigated experimentally, and the coefficient in the vibrated bed was found to be larger than that in an unvibrated bed. Measurement of pressure fluctuation indicated that mechanical vibration with larger vibratory acceleration than the gravitational caused pulsated gas flow through the bed.
Considering a simple piston model for the motion of the bed, an equation is derived to describe the pulsated gas flow.
The heat transfer coefficient is correlated with gas velocity, taking account of the pulsating gas velocity estimated from the equation and the experimental results of pressure fluctuation. The coefficient in a vibro-fluidized bed is found to agree well with that in a bed without vibration, except for the range of larger gas velocity with smaller particles.
