During the last 25 years, there has been remarkable progress in the automotive industry, and in consequence, the oils for lubricating these engines, have made equally spectacular improvements. This growth has been principally due to the improved Quality of additives in crankcase oils.
These additives extended the life of the oil and engine by inhibiting oil deterior-ation, by reducing corrosion, rusting, and wear of such important engine parts as.bearings, piston rings, and valve train assemblies, and by controlling engine sludges and varnish deposits.
From this view point, this paper briefly reviews the additives used in motor oils, such as detergent-dispersants, oxidation and corrosion inhibitors, viscosity improvers, extreme pressure additives, pour point depressants, and anti-foam agents, respectively, Especially, about detergent-dispersants, oxidation inhibitors, and V.I.improvers, which are using in great quantities, their chemical structures and some problems in performance are illustrated.
