    Thermodynamic analyses have been conducted for the H-Coal process producing synthetic fuels from bituminous coal. A Structured Process Energy-Exergy-flow Diagram (SPEED) for the H-Coal process is presented, which depicts the transformation of energy and exergy among the processes and the hierarchical structure of the process system with a compact format of the SPEED.
    Energy and exergy efficiencies for the process of upgrading coal derived liquids are discussed. And also, thermodynamic analyses are performed for a process of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis producing SNG, LPG, Gasoline, etc.
    Exergy losses of various coal conversion processes are calculated based on 1 Cmol of feed coal, and the results are shown with the format of the SPEED.

    Liquefaction behavior and chemical structure of Alberta coal, Canada have been evaluated by semicritical gas extraction and conventional autoclave experiment. The effects of catalyst (ZnCl2, SnCl2·2H2O) and solvent (toluene, CH3OH, C2H5OH, C3H7OH) on the gas extraction have been observed using a small high pressure flow apparatus near critical conditions with or without hydrogen. Conversion to gas and liquid increased strikingly in the presence of hydrogen up to 43wt% and the weight ratio of liquid to gaseous product also increased with the addition of catalyst and solvent.
    Autoclave experiments were carried out in a 300ml conventional autoclave equipped with a stirring device at 420°C under 51Kg/cm2⋅G of hydrogen in the presence of 5 parts of tetralin. Conversion calculated on the basis of tetralin insoluble were observed up to 85wt%.
    The structural parameters of the extracts obtained from both types of reactions were evaluated by the modified Brown-Ladner's equation. From average fa of 0.6 and Hau/Ca of 0.9, an average unit cluster has been estimated to be the mixture of one or two aromatic rings which are joined together with some saturate groups.

    Short contact time liquefaction of subbituminous Taiheiyo coal by using binary system vehicles at 400°C for 10 minutes under autogenous condition was studied. These vehicles were mainly quinoline + 1, 2, 3, 4-tetrahydroquinoline (THQ), anthrathene oil THQ, petroleum vacuum residue pitch (VR-Pitch) + THQ, tetralin + THQ.
    On the coal liquefaction, THQ has a noticeable effect as a hydrogen donor vehicle for coals under d. a. f. C % 80. And petroleum vacuum residue is also very important hydrogen donor source for Solvolysis liquefaction of coal.
    In the case of mixtures of hydrogen non-donor and THQ, the conversion to benzene soluble matter (BS) increased with increase of THQ content and approached to that (84.5%) by THQ only.
    In the case of mixtures of hydrogen donor and THQ, especially VR-Pitch and THQ, the large conversion to BS more than 84.5% (THQ only) was obtained in the range of 10 to 40 wt% content of VR-Pitch. The conversion to BS was nearly 100% with a mixture of 30 wt% VR-Pitch and 70 wt% THQ.
    However, in the mixtures of hydrogen donor vehicles such as tetralin, hydrogenated anthrathene oil and THQ respectively, the conversion to BS was not enhanced among various mixing ratios.

    Thermal treatments of Taiheiyo and Shin-yubari coals were carried out with various alcohols or alcohol-tetralin mixed solvents (1: 1 by weight) at 350°C and the yields of tetrahydrofuran soluble fraction were determined as a measure of coal dissolution. For Taiheiyo coal the yields for methanol-and ethanoltetralin mixtures were found to be much greater than those for the alcohol or tetralin alone and also greater than those for the mixtures of tetralin with more bulky alcohols such as isopropanol. From these results and the results of the extraction of coals with alcohol-benzene mixture at room temperature, it may not be unreasonable to consider that tetralin in mixture penetrates more extensively into coals than tetralin alone does, by the action of alcohols, probably the swelling of coals. Bulky alcohols may be less permeative. The extent of swelling of coals has been reported to decrease with the decrease of oxygen content of coals and for Shin-yubari coal having low oxygen content there was no substantial difference in the yields among alcohol-and n-hexanetetralin mixtures.

    The reaction characteristics of HCN-O2, HCN-O2-CO, and HCN-O2-CH4 (all N2 base) systems were investigated in a flow system using synthetic gases, an electric furnace and a quartz test tube 20mm i.d., with the following results.
    1) With HCN-O2 system, the rate of decomposition of HCN (and formation of NO) is low as compared with 2) and 3) below.
    2) With HCN-O2-CO system, HCN was decomposed rapidly even at 930°C, and the NO formation ratio ({NO} out/ {HCN} in) was substantially influenced by concentration of O2 in inlet gas.
    3) With HCN-O2-CH4 system, decomposition of HCN did not take place till CH4 was converted to CO and H2.
    4) The reaction characteristics of HCN were studied by simulation that included 57 elementary reactions and 22 species.

    In this paper, the results of the performance tests of the looped type heat transport element employing water as working fluid in the temperature range from 26 to 95t at the outlet of the heating zone.
    The container of heat transport element was fabricated from the looped copper tube consisted of riser tube and down comer with inner diameter 15.6 mm. The total height of this element is 1972mm.
    Electric heater for heating zone of element was mounted at the lower part of the riser tube and water cooler for heat removal from the element also was mounted at the upper part of the down comer.
    As a result of this test, it can be concluded that the stable working region of this heat transport element depends on Reynolds number in the both tubes, that is, the flow in the tube of the high temperature side is turbulent flow and the flow of the low temperature side is the laminar flow.

    For the purpose of converting the disposed polypropylene to fuel oil or chemical feed stocks, the experimental work on thermal degradation of polypropylene was carried out by using a CSTR under the pressure of 1-8 atm, at 390°C.
    The following results were obtained.
    1) The pressure has a marked effect on the rate of thermal degradation of polypropylene. The degradation rate decreases to three fifth with the pressure elevation of 1 to 8atm.
    2) The molecular weight of gaseous product, liquid product and reactor content decrease with the elevation of the degradation pressure, respectively.
    3) The higher pressure diminishes the foaming phenomena in the reactor and makes the operation of CSTR more stable.

    Benzene insoluble matter (BI) was obtained from liquefaction of sub-bituminous Taiheiyo coal with 1, 2, 3, 4-tetrahydroquinoline (THQ) as a hydrogen donor vehicle for 10 minutes at 400°C under autogenous condition. The sedimentation phenomena of BI were studied in benzene with various anti-solvents.
    In the case of paraffinic hydrocarbons, especially n-alkane, as an anti-solvent, the sedimentation velocity of BI in benzene remakably increased with increasing the amount of n-alkane added. Furthermore, the addition of n-alkane with short alkyl chain, like n-pentane, accelerated the sedimentation velocity of BI.
