In this research, I examine the meaning of cross-cultural and comparative projects and research for STEAM education as an approach in Japanese (science) education. This examination is based on the author’s experiences, and both prior and on-going research focusing on gifted education and science education from a comparative perspective. Comparative and cross-cultural research is approached through four perspectives: 1) teacher competence and professional development, 2) importance of localization, 3) educational goals and material realities, 4) having several points of comparison. Though challenging to design and execute well, the cross-cultural approaches can contribute to knowledge development, increased understanding of the “home system”, policies and practices in several ways.
